Lesson 15
Text A. Dynamic Data Exchange.
Text B. Plug and Play.
Text C. Object Linking and Embedding.
Text D. Operating System Overview.
Ex.1 Translate the following technologies into Russian:
Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
Plug and Play (PnP)
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)
Ex.2 a) Read and translate into Russian:
Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
In the Windows and other operating systems, DDE allows information to be shared or communicated between programs. For example, when you change a form in your database program or a data item in a spreadsheet program, they can be set up to also change these forms or items anywhere they occur in other programs you may use. DDE is interprocess communication that uses shared memory as a common exchange area and provides applications with a protocol or set of commands and message formats. DDE uses a client/server model in which the application requesting data is considered the client and the application providing data is considered the server.
b) Answer the following questions:
What does DDE stand for?
What happens if you change a form in your database program or a data item in a spreadsheet program?
What does DDE provide applications with?
What kind of model does DDE use?
What application is considered the client (the server)?
Ex.3 a) Read and translate into Russian:
Plug and Play (PnP)
It is a set of specifications developed by Intel that allows a computer to automatically detect and configure a device and install the appropriate device drivers. Plug and Play makes it easier to set up new hardware and software. Plug and Play devices choose settings, such as IRQs (Interrupt Request – запрос на прерывание) or DMA channels, without requiring you to set them. And Plug and Play devices can be added to a computer that doesn’t have a Plug and Play BIOS.
b) Translate into English:
Технология Plug and Play обеспечивает возможности интеграции программных продуктов и аппаратных средств.
Она поддерживает такие типы устройств, как мониторы, видеоплаты, принтеры, звуковые карты, различные контроллеры жестких дисков и т.д.
Диспетчер устройств (Device Manager) позволяет пользователю получать информацию обо всех устройствах, найденных системой.
Ex.4 a) Read and translate into Russian:
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)
OLE is a method for sharing information among applications. Linking an object, such as a graphic, from one document to another inserts a reference (ссылка) to the object into the second document. Any changes you make in the object in the first document will also be made in the second document. Embedding an object inserts a copy of an object from one document into another document. Changes you make in the object in the first document will not be updated in the second unless the embedded object is explicitly updated.
b) Make up sentences:
Multiple , contain, types, OLE documents, of data.
OLE, visually , be, can, objects, edited.
OLE, data, you, functionality, between, enables, applications, to share.
