ДЭС и близкие ему эстрогены также используются для животных как стимуляторы роста. В отличие от природных стероидов, они не сразу разрушаются в печени, и их остатки сохраняются в мясных продуктах. Согласно ВОЗ,

«Продолжающееся накопление доказательств того, что диэтилстильбэстрол является потенциальным канцерогеном для организма людей, и факт обнаружения за последние годы нежелательно высоких уровней диэтилстильбэстрола в некоторых продуктах питания для маленьких детей являются сильными аргументами в пользу решения, уже принятого во многих странах, - запретить использование всех стильбенов в качестве веществ, стимулирующих рост.» [39]

На Филиппинах ДЭС был запрещен как для использования у людей, так и для ветеринарного применения [40]. Европейское Сообщество в 1981 г. приняло директиву, которая запрещает использование ДЭС и других стильбенов у животных[41]. В США запрет на использование ДЭС для животных, принятый в 1972 г., был отменен апелляционным судом в 1974 г.; и только в 1979 г. FDA США опять запретило использование этого лекарства как стимулятора роста для крупного рогатого скота и овец[42]. Однако в феврале 1983 г. на нескольких фермах было обнаружено 1500 голов скота со свежими метаболитами ДЭС в организме, что объяснялось его нелегальным использованием[43].

«Риск без пользы»

Хотя первоначально ДЭС назначали в надежде помочь женщинам, у которых могла быть трудная беременность, один акушер-гинеколог высказывается так: "ДЭС несет в себе риск без пользы" [44]." Не может быть оправданий дальнейшему продолжению такого риска.

Рекомендации к действию

1. ДЭС следует запретить и как лекарственный продукт для людей, и для использования в качестве стимуляторов роста у животных, выращиваемых для употребления людьми.

2. Правительствам следует изучить масштаб этой проблемы и по возможности выявить всех людей, подвергавшихся воздействию ДЭС, и предоставить им полную, точную информацию о проблемах, с которыми они могут столкнуться, а также обеспечить им необходимую медицинскую помощь.

3. Работники здравоохранения должны быть информированы о том, как распознавать признаки воздействия ДЭС, и осуществлять мониторинг и лечение связанных с ним проблем здоровья.

4. Университетам и работникам здравоохранения следует предпринять дальнейшие исследования последствий, которые воздействие ДЭС могло иметь на матерей, их детей и детей их детей (так называемое третье поколение).
