Vocabulary development: word building

Суффикс –ive выполняет двоякую функцию в словообразовании в английском языке:

а) образует от глаголов существительные, обозначающие названия вещества, его свойства или назначения, а также деятельность человека: adhesive – вяжущее вещество; explosive – взрывчатое вещество; abrasive – абразивный материал; representative – представитель;

b) образует от существительных прилагательные со значением свойства, качества.
