Laurie Lee was born in 1914. Educated locally he worked for several years as an office clerk before moving to London, where he worked as a builder`s labourer. Lee travelled in Europe and in 1937 joined International Brigades to fight in the Spanish Civil War. In the Second War he made documentary films for a General Post Office, and the Ministry of Information. It was during the period he published his first volume of poems, the Sun, My Monument. He became famous for his autobiographical trilogy. Lee died in 1997.
6. Talk about the psychological problems and changes in the behaviour of a child. Compare them with those your bro/sist/ had when was a child(«Dear Editors»).
To my mind, one of the main problems which parents and teachers face when bringing children up is bullying. Even a lovely child who is always first in everything, confident and determined, can make other children fly in terror from her.
A child can be even cruel, can be scratcher and if anyone upsets him or her or stands in his way his hand will flash out fast and score down the face of his playmate from forehead to chin.
Of course, bullying in the playground should be stopped but behaviour modification of a child is not an easy thing. All the usual ways such as telling off and punishment will probably give no results. But teachers have learned that only one thing works. No punishment should be given, but the bullies should be ignored and the victims rewarded.
If a scratcher sees that the hurt one is given a sweet and mothered while his wishes are ignored, he will never do it again.
That is why parents who find older children bullying younger brother and sisters might do well to replace shouting and punishment by rewarding and giving more attention to the injured one. It’s certainly less exhausting.
7.Talk about the daily chores of a British house wife.Compere them with those a young woman in this country.
Many British women don’t work because their husbands earn enough to bring the children up and to keep the house.
We read about a day of DH who seems to be a typical Br. Housewife.
Every day of a British housewife is similar to the previous one. She starts her day early in the morning at 7 a.m. with a mug of tea or coffee. Then she pays much attention to her children. She helps them to wash and dress and even makes time to play with them. Then she hurtles around the kitchen from frying pan to fridge and back again in response to her children’s persistent demands.
She sees them and her husband off and after that she has to do the washing up, dry the dishes, put them away and clean the kitchen. Twice a week she does the washing and ironing moreover she has to save on washing powder, hot water and electricity. She worries a lot about the nutrition so her children and husband have been trained to eat a good breakfast.
In the afternoon lunch should be prepared for her husband and after all this she tries to be cheerful and energetic to play with her little children and to read to they until the settle down to sleep.
Of course, cooking evening meal is also her responsibility. So I can imagine that it isn’t lazy to be a housewife. Doing all this work the housewives don’t have enough time for themselves. They don’t have the time to take care over the appearances, to have a good rest.
