12. Talk about the famous state buildings(White house).
Speaking about the USA we cannot but mention the White House the home of the President of the United States and one of the most popular tourist attractions.
Originally the house was grey and was called the PresidentalPalace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. At this time the city of Washington itself was being built. It was to be the nation’s new capital city.
The president’s home was an important part of the plan. A contest was held to pick a design for the president’s home. An architect named James Hoban won. He designed a large three-story house of gray stone.
The first president never lived in the PresidentalPalace.The first president to live there was John Adams the second president of the United States and his wife,Mrs.Adams, didn’t really like her new house. In her letters she often complained about the cold, fifty fireplaces were not enough to keep the house warm.
In 1812 the United States and Britain went to war. In 1814 the British invaded Washington. They burned many buildings including the PresidentalPalace.
After the war James Hoban the original architect rebuilt the president’s home. To cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted white. Before long it became known as the White House.
Now everybody knows that it is one of the symbols of America and one of the most popular tourists attractions in the United States. Every year more than 1.5 million visitors go through the five rooms open for tourists.
13. Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of having a big or a small family ( I prefer a big family).
Having a big or a small family has some advantages and disadvantages.
To begin with a big family teaches the older children how to look after the younger ones. All the big families are always friendly and good fun. When a child has a brother or a sister he can’t feel alone. Children can play together and spend their time with fun.
It is awful to be an only child in the family.An only child is often spoilt, because parents give him everything what he wants and he gets lots of attention from parents. Sometimes he is a bit shy and not very sociable. An only child doesn’t have to share everything with the other child.
I think the ideal family consists of three or four members. My family isn’t big. There are one children in my family. I haven’t brother or sister. I am the only child in the family. No one supports me and defends me.
I think it isn’t very good.
14. Talk about nationality traits as seen by the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish (Section I, Unit 3).
No doubt that English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish are quite different.
Englishman are considered to be very conservative, cod and reserved. They can be friendly but it’s not easy to make friends with them.
People in Scotland are much more outgoing and talkative. They’re much less reserved and they love chatting-especially the country people. They are very generous and hospitable, they always welcome visitors with open arms and will offer them lotsof food and drink at home. The Scots are brilliant people.
The Welsh are quite friendly. They’re proud of the Welsh language and often speak it in shops and with friends. But people think the Welsh are unfriendly justbecause they want to speak their own language. Besides,Wales has a great tradition of poets and poetry and music too. It is famous for (Richard Burton, Dylan Thomas, the Eisted food and miner’s choirs).
What about the Irish, they’ve got lots of a good music too. The traditional stuff is with a fidde and tin wistle. People in Ireland aren’t as self-conscious about singing as they are in England. There are music–festivals in the summer where they do Irish dancing.
Besides, there are fewer people then in England and evenjone gets to know each other a lot quicker.
