POULTRY DIET

In commercial poultry farming we pay attention to the diet. Vitamin D deficiency results in rickets and indicates that the fowls are not receiving enough sunshine.

Green vegetable matter is an essential part of poultry diet. It may be supplied either by cutting and feeding to the fowls confined in poultry houses or by allowing the birds to graze out of doors.

There is general agreement that for continued egg produc­tion high protein content in the ration is necessary, at least 17 or 18%. How to compound such a ration is a problem for each poultry-man to meet. It depends largely upon local avai­lability of the numerous highly nitrogenous feed stuffs. Grain contains some protein but animal proteins seem to be necessary for best results. It is recommended that 25 or 40 % of the ration be of the animal origin. Beef meal, buttermilk, dried blood and fish products are satisfactory.

Salt is the best source of chlorine which is one of the essential materials of a fowl's diet.
