в английских загадках
Загадки сопровождают нашу жизнь. Само понятие “загадка” представляет собой метафорическое выражение, в котором один предмет изображается посредством другого, имеющегоснимкакое-нибудь, хотябыотдаленное, сходство.
Игра слов – стилистический оборот речи или авторская миниатюра, основанные на комическом эффекте одинаково звучащих слов или группы слов, имеющих разное значение, либо разных значений одного и того же слова или словосочетания.
Следует обратить внимание, что в игре слов юмор утонченный, можно сказать, благородный.
Употребление и восприятие большинства стилистических приемов требуют от человека хорошего знания языка. Но есть и такой стилистический прием, для восприятия и особенно употребления которого необходимы еще эрудиция и сообразительность. Такова игра слов, или каламбур, – явление, существующее во всех европейских языках.
Большинство английских загадок содержат игру слов. В них наличествует только один явный элемент, а разгадывание скрытого смысла другого и является основной целью игры. Для возникновения игры слов необходим контекст, в котором бы имелась возможность для реализации обоих значений обыгрываемых элементов.
Игра слов в загадках может быть основана на использовании: слов-омонимов, лексической полисемии (многозначности), фразеологических оборотов.
I. Слова-омонимы
В загадках со словами-омонимами присутствуют три варианта сходства.
1) Полное совпадение как звуковой, так и графической оболочки
•Why are movie stars so cool?
– Because they have so many fans.
a) fan – фанат; б) fan – вентилятор, веер; a) cool – крутой, классный; б) прохладный.
•Why is a book like a king?
– Because they both have pages.
a)page – лист, страница; б) page – мальчик-слуга.
•What has two hands and a face but no arms?
– A clock.
a)hand – рука; б) hand – стрелка часов;
a)face – лицо, б) face – циферблат.
•What has ears but can’t hear?
– Corn.
a)ears – уши; б) an ear of corn – кукурузный початок.
•What has an eye but can’t see?
– A needle.
a)eye – глаз; б) an eye of a needle – ушко иголки.
•Why is a restless man in bed like a lawyer?
– Because he lies on one side, then turns around and lies on the other.
a)lie – лежать; б) lie – лгать.
2) Полное совпадение звуковой оболочки, но разное графическое изображение
•What do bees do with all their honey?
– They cell it.
Имплицитно предполагается глагол to sell:
to cell – помещать в пчелиную соту; to sell [sel] – продавать.
•What has four eyes but cannot see?
– The Mississippi.
Имплицитно предполагается буква английского алфавита I.
I [QI] – буква I; eye [QI] – глаз.
•Why do dragons sleep during the day?
– So that they can fight knights.
В невыраженный смысл заложено существительное nights:
knight [nQIt] – рыцарь; night [nQIt] – ночь.
•Why is a baker a most improvident person?
–Because he is continually selling that which he kneads.
Имплицитно предполагается существительное needs:
kneads – месит (месить), needs – нужда, потребность, запросы.
•When is a door not a door?
–When it is ajar.
a jar – банка; ajar – приоткрытый. mails – почта; males – мужчины.
•What would contain all the snuff in the world?
– No one nose.
Имплицитно предполагается глагол knows. nose – нос; knows – знает.
•When will there be only twenty-five letters in the alphabet?
– When U and I come together.
Имплицитно предполагается местоимения you и I.
Буква английского алфавита U – местоимение you (ты), буква I – местоимение I (я).
3) Частичное совпадение звуковой оболочки
•What is the difference between a thief and a church bell?
–One steals from the people, the other peals from the steeple.
steal [sti:l] – воровать, грабить; peal [pi:l] – трезво-
нить, звонить;
people [pi:pl] – народ, люди; steeple [sti:pl] – колоколь-
ня, башня.
•What is the difference between a greedy person and an electric toaster?
–One takes the most, and the other makes the toast.
take [teIk] – брать, хватать; make [meIk] – делать; most [mqVst] – самое большее; toast [tqVst] – тост,
гренок.
•What flower does everyone have?
– Tulips.
Имплицитно предполагается two lips; tulips [‘tju:lips]
–тюльпаны; two lips [tu lIps] – две губы.
•What is the difference between a hill and a pill?
–A hill is hard to get up, a pill is hard to get down. hill [hIl] – холм, pill [pIl] – таблетка.
•What is the difference between a jeweler and jailer?
–A jeweler sells watches, a jailer watches cells.
a jeweler [dZu:ələ] – ювелир, a jailer [dZeilə] –
тюремщик.
•What sea would a man like to be in on a wet day?
– Adriatic. (A dry attic.)
sea [si:] – море; be [bi:] – быть.
•What is the difference between a rejected and an accepted lover?
– One misses the kisses and the other kisses the misses. kisses – поцелуи; misses – скучает.
II. Лексическая полисемия, то есть многозначность одного и того же слова
•Where can you always find diamonds?
– In a deck of cards.
diamonds – 1. алмазы, бриллианты; 2. бубны (карточная масть).
•How can you get out of a locked room with a piano in it?
–Play the piano until you find the right key and then you can get out.
key – 1. ключ; 2. клавиша.
•Where can you find cards on a ship?
–On the deck.
deck – 1. палуба; 2. колода карт.

•Why is it easy to break into an old man’s house?
– Because his gait is broken and his locks are few.
locks – 1. замки; 2. волосы; gait – походка, gate –
ворота.
•Why is it almost certain that Shakespeare was a broker?
–Because no other man has furnished so many stock quotations.
stock – 1. ствол дерева; 2. акция.
•Why is a widow like a gardener?
–Because she tries to get rid of her weeds.
weeds – 1. сорняки; 2. вдовий траур.
•Why is a stout gentlemen prone to malachite?
–Because they are men of size.
size – 1. размер; 2. клей.
•When does a lady think her husband a Hercules?
– When fond of his club.
club – 1. клуб; 2. клюшка.
III. Фразеологические обороты
•Why couldn’t the dog catch his tail?
– Because it is hard to make ends meet.
To make ends meet – сводить концы с концами.
В буквальном смысле данную фразу можно перевести как “заставить концы встретиться”.
•Why do wallets make so much noise?
– Because money talks.
Выражение “money talks” в разговорной речи используют, когда хотят сказать, что люди с большими деньгами всегда имеют большую власть и могут получить все, чтоонипожелают. Дословноэтовыражениепереводится как “деньги разговаривают”.
•Why is a bride always out of luck on her wedding day?
– Because she never marries the best man.
Best man – шафер. Дословный перевод данной фразы: самый лучший мужчина.
Такой стилистический прием, как игра слов, целиком и полностью базируется на внутрилингвистических отношениях, существующих между словами данного языка, но в большинстве случаев отсутствующих в системе другого языка. Элементом, обеспечивающим игре слов успех, является непредсказуемость того или иного звена в цепи речи, так называемый эффект неожиданности. Появление каждого элемента речевой цепи предопределяется всеми предшествующими элементами и предопределяет все последующие: одновременно или последовательно читатель воспринимает два значения, одно из которых является для него неожиданным.
