1) Точное указание на завершившееся время (ago, at 5, last summer, when we were young)

I saw him 5 minutes ago. They had dinner at 3.

2) Повествование о прошлом; перечисление последовательных действий

He came in, turned on the light and sat in the arm-chair.

3) Отсутствие актуальности Suvorov never lost a single battle.
