Aerodrome

1. What is an aerodrome?

It’s a defined area on land or water (including any buildings, installations and equipment) that is used or intended to be used for the arrival, departure and surface movement of aircraft.

2. How can the aerodromes be different?

They can be different in size, category and purpose.

3. What elements does each aerodrome include?

It includes airport landside and airside, terminal airspace.

Airport landside- that are of an airport and buildings to which the non-travelling public has free access, sometimes referred to as “public side”. (are to which non travelling public has free access)

Airport air side- the movement area of an airport, adjacent terrain and building thereof, access to which is controlled. (runways, taxiways; access is controlled)

Terminal airspace- the airspace in which approach control service or airport traffic control service is provided.(the air space in which approach control service or ATC service is provided)

4. What is he runway?

Runway is a defined rectangular area, prepared for the landing and take-off run of aircraft along its length.

5. How are runways usually numbered?

They are numbered in relation to the magnetic direction

6. What else is added to the RW designation, except numbers?

It’s L, R, C.

7. Define the stopway.

Stopway is a defined rectangular area at the end of the runway within which an aircraft can be stopped in the case of an abandoned take-off.

8. Where should an aircraft be stopped in case of abandoned take off?

AC should be stopped in stopway

9. Define the clearway./What is a clearway?

The clearway is a strip of the same width as the runway and an extension of the runway (and astopway if there is one) which is free of any obstacles.

10. What is a taxiway?/Define the taxiway.

Taxiway used to provide connection between parts of aerodrome and for taxing aircraft

11. How is the connection between different parts of the aerodrome provided?

It provided by Taxiways

12. What is high speed taxiway (HST) or turn off?

HST – taxiway connected to a RW at an acute angle and designed to allow landing AC to turn off at higher speeds than are achived on other exit taxiways and thereby minimizing RW occupancy time.

13. What allows landing aircraft to turn off at higher speed minimizing the RW occupancy time?

HST

14. Define apron/ramp. What are the purposes of an apron?

Apron- defined area, intended to accommodate aircraft for purposes of loading or unloading passengers or cargo, refulling, parking or maintenance.

15. Define aircraft stand.

It’s an area on the apron for AFT parking

-16. What is the purpose of maintenance area?

-17. Which aerodrome element relates to the capacity and capability of the airport to accomodate different categories of aircraft?

18. What is a Tower? What does the Tower provide?

On each aerodrome there is a Tower - a terminal facility using air/ground radio-communications, visual signaling and other devices to provide ATC services to all AFT in the vicinity of the aerodrome and in the maneuvering area

19. Define holding bay.

area where AFT can be held or by-passed to facilitate efficient surface AFT movement

20. Define holding point.

position at which taxiing AFT may be required to hold to obtain adequate clearance from a RW

21. Define threshold.

the beginning of the RW usable for landing

  1. What is AFT refueller/tow-bar/tug/GPU (Ground Power Unit)/mobile lounge/double-deck loader used for?

Aircraft refueller-used for refulling AC;

Tow bar – used for connecting AC and tug;

Tug-used for pushing;

Ground power unit-used for providing power to AC engines and electrical systems;

Mobile lounge –used for transporting passengers from terminal to AC;

Double deck loader- is for loading and unloading baggage and cargo/

23. What aviation specialists maintain the proper operation of the aerodrome?

Airport director, airport engineer, maintenance engineer, meteorologist, ATC, marshaller.
