July 15 – Verification Test

For Tuesday, July 16:

  • Bring the course syllabus (please read it and prepare questions for the instructor if you have any).

  • Bring the English-Russian dictionary.

  • Make a copy of the book “The Scarlet Letter” by N. Hawthorne (for home reading)

For Wednesday, July 17:

  • Bring an interesting/special object from home and prepare to describe it in class so that other students can guess what it is;

  • Bring a few photos (hard or soft copy) from any of your trips, prepare to show them to your classmates and tell about your travelling experiences;

  • Bring the course syllabus (please read it and prepare questions for the instructor if you have any).

  • Bring the English-Russian dictionary.

For Thursday, July 18:

  • Bring the course syllabus (please read it and prepare questions for the instructor if you have any).

  • Bring the English-Russian and Russian-English dictionary.

  • Read Chapters 1 and 2 in the book “The Scarlet Letter” by N. Hawthorne. While reading please underline and translate the new words (right in the book). In addition, please decide if these sentences are right or wrong (please write down the sentences and your answers in your notebook):

  1. The prison is in the town center.

  2. The people of Boston hate Hester.

  3. Hester was born in New England.

  4. Hester came to Boston without her husband.

  5. Hester knows the name of her child’s father.

  6. People know that Chillingworth is Hester’s husband.

If the statement is wrong, then write the right answer based on the book content.

  • Listen to one interesting and positive news in English at CNN, BBC or another online news channel (please do not choose some terrible news where people die…because it’s sad to talk about it…). Print and read the transcript of this news. Translate any new words there and prepare to share it in class. Below the transcript please write (by hand) why you’ve selected this particular news and what new information you have learned from it. You can write your answers to these questions in two or more sentences

  • Please type your “I AM …(somebody)” task describing your character or individuality (in the way that Zarina asked you on Tuesday). An example is given at Zarina’s L:drive folder: L:\Zarina Zagitova\Practicum\portfolio.

Headings and Formatting Please use the Times New Roman, size 12 (size 14 for the heading) and double space in all your writing tasks.
