  1. Text A. My Institute and my student years.

Some of the most important years of your life will be spent pursuing a university degree. Your diploma is a passport to a better future, but it is only a symbol of what you will accomplish. The key elements of your university education are the process through which you learn the experiences you accumulate and the store of knowledge you acquire. They will be with you for the rest of your life.

The main task of our Institute is training of qualified specialists for financial system. During 60 years our Institute has trained a lot of specialists who work in different financial structures, in different fields of social-economic development of Ukraine and other countries. A lot of graduates occupy high ranks, working as chiefs and specialists of financial, taxes, insurance, control inspection, treasury structures and enterprises. Among graduates there are scientists and lecturers of educational institutions.

Studying at our Institute gives a solid background in all spheres of knowledge and prepares for practical work. Nowadays it is a large school where more than 2000 students are currently enrolled. Students study at full-time and correspondence departments. There are two Faculties: “Finance and credit”, “Audit and accounting”.

The finance institute occupies two buildings in Chapayev Devision Street. It's a 5 floor educational complex, connected with the students’ hostel with the help of the covered passage. It also has a developed infrastructure like: a hostel, a dining room-cafe, an assembly hall, a gym, a training complex, an athletic field and a library. There are lecture halls and laboratories here which are equipped with modern computers and up-to-date equipment.

The lectures begin at 8.30 and finish at 13.20. After classes students usually go to the library and work in the reading hall on the ground floor. Sometimes they go to the computer center which is on the top floor. There we also have a canteen and a wardrobe on the ground floor and gym on the first floor. The director's office is on the first floor. On the second floor there is time-table and the teacher's room.

The academic program includes economics (macroeconomics and microeconomics), finances, statistics, accounting, marketing, management, computer knowledge as well as languages, philosophy, literature and physical training.

The main goal of Odessa Ukrainian State Institute of Finance and International Trade is to help youth to find their place in today's hard life, to form the system of creative professional knowledge in the modern conditions of development of Ukraine's Economy and its integration into the world education.

In the first year at university some students find there's a tug between work and social life. A study often seems like a burden and sometimes social life wins out. So a student needs to be very self-motivated in his first year. He can't afford to sit back and not do the work for a week even he doesn't feel up to it. It's not going to go away. It's very easy to fall behind and it's very difficult to get on top again. A student shouldn't be lured by people, who seem to be going out all the lime und not doing any work. People do work even if they don't seem to. You can get into the partying mode very easily.

Freedom is amazing. Suddenly you're not living at home and can do exactly what you want. But you need to be responsible about your studies as well as having fun.

Your university experience, charged with the excitement of new knowledge, offers personal growth and fulfillment. The university will help you to grow in many ways. The right university will broaden your general knowledge and develop relevant skills for life and a career. It will reinforce your ability to continue learning throughout life and to adapt to a changing world. While at university, you will develop lifetime friendships. So it is not surprising that selecting the right university is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.

  1. Text B. My plans for the future.

I entered Odessa Institute of Finance and International Trade this summer. So, I have already chosen my profession. I am going to be an economist in some years. I think my profession is especially important nowadays in the period of new market relations. It's quite possible that accounting will be my main specialty and it will help me to make a career or start my own business. I would like to work with numbers and figures. Of course, it takes much of nerves, because it is a great responsibility to work with large amounts of money. Especially when this money is not yours and belongs to thousands of other people. Sometimes economists spend a whole night at work, preparing their reports.

At the Institute we study a lot of different subjects like: economics, marketing, management, accounting, computers and so on. My Institute gives a very good background knowledge of subject. But this knowledge is too general. Most graduates are prepared for work only theoretically. We didn’t have much practice. The only opportunity to work somewhere is that during the summer vacation. But of course one wants to rest a little after a whole year of studies and a hard exam session. But in my opinion, practice is the only opportunity to gain practical knowledge of subject.

Still I hope that my knowledge will be enough for working. I think that it will be easy for me to operate with different accounts and goods, to draw up and check any bank documents, to sell and buy foreign currency. To feel confident in my profession I should keep an eye on economic news with all figures and production records. As a future economist I should keep my word and be honest. Punctuality is also very important for business and social appointments.

I hope to have the opportunity to work at a foreign enterprise or to work abroad for a big company. As far as I know, this kind of job is well paid. Of course, it is quite difficult to qualify for such a job. You need to have a very good educational level and a good command of spoken and written foreign language, computer skills, and, finally, some experience.

I think that it is quite impossible to have a good command of English after finishing secondary school. Two or four hours of English a week is not enough. It is necessary to have classes outside the University. One more factor which really helps to have a good command of English is the communication with native speakers, and of course reading much in English. It is especially useful to read books on economics, business, marketing and management in the original. When one knows the special vocabulary or terminology it will be much easier to communicate with your colleagues from other countries. As you know, English is world recognized as an international business language.

I don’t think I’ll be unemployed. Firms need specialists in finance, management and marketing. Employers need young and energetic employees. I believe that my knowledge will give me a chance to achieve success in life and to become a good economist or an accountant.
