Communication skills

  1. Text B. Read the following dialogue. Going through the customs.

1. - Helen, the passport control officer is coming. He will ask you for your passport. Please produce it.

- Here it is. I believe he will ask me where I am going to.

- That's right. Besides he will be interested to know how long you are going to stay there.

- Am I obliged to answer all the questions?

- No doubt. You will have to tell the passport control officer about the purpose of your visit.

- Anything else?

- Nothing else. I want you to know that they are usually very polite.

- I'll follow suit. What will the customs officer do?

- He will check your luggage. He will ask you "Have you anything to declare?" or "Is there anything liable to duty?" You must answer the questions.

- I see. I have got a bottle of perfume and a bottle of whisky. Are they liable to duty?

- I don't think so. I've got a box of peppermint chocolates. It is duty free.

- I wonder if tobacco is liable to duly.

- I hardly think so. Anyhow as soon as we go through the customs, our journey will be coming to an end.

2. At the check-in desk

- Can I see your hand luggage, please?

- I just have this bag and a laptop.

- Could you put them on the scales? I'm afraid the bag will have to go in the hold.

- Is that really necessary? It's very small.

- I'm afraid so.

1. Checking into a hotel

- Hello, I have a reservation in the name of Perry.

- I'm sorry, I cannot find a booking in that name. Did you book the room yourself?

- No, my company, Carditis, booked it.

- Ah yes, here it is. Could you fill in this form, please? Would you like a smoking or non-smoking room?

- A non-smoking room, please, with a bath and a balcony if possible.

- We have a non-smoking room with a balcony on the 10th floor. Enjoy your stay.

2. Booking a hotel

- Wellington Hotel. Can I help you?

- Yes, I've been trying to book a room on your hotel website but I can't complete the booking.

- Sorry, sir. I can do the booking for you.

- Thank you. I'd like to book a twin room for two nights, the 12th and 13th of June.

- Just one moment. I'll check our availability. Can I have your name please?

- Yes, it's Cook. I won't be arriving until 11:00 p.m. Do you need my credit card number to hold the reservation?

- Yes, please.

4. - I'd like to have a double room with bath.

- How long are you planning to slay?

- We'll slay for four days.

- I can give you an outside double room on the sixth floor.

- Is it very noisy?

- No, it isn't. The street is very quiet. In front of the hotel you can see a park.

- How much is the room?

- It's... dollars a day. The charge includes breakfast.

- Is there a bath?

- Yes, every room has bath, telephone and colour TV.

- All right. I'll take the room.

- I suppose they must check our visas, and we should go through the customs.

- That is exactly what we'll have to go through. Do you think it will take us much time?

- No idea. I have never been abroad before.

- Have you got anything for sale?

- What do you mean? I've come to this country on business.

- I mean gold, fruit, perfume, liquor... To cut a long story short, do you have anything that is liable to duty?

- No, I don't. Everything I have is for my own use.

- I see.

2. Checking in for a flight

- Can I have your ticket and passport, please? Thank you. Would you like an aisle or a window seat?

- I'd like an aisle seat if possible.

- OK. I have given you a seat in the exit row, is that all right?

- Yes, that's fine. Thanks. And I'd like to sit next to my colleague if possible.

- I'm sorry. We don't have any more seats together. Could you talk to the cabin attendant when you board the plane?

3. A flight delay

- I'm sorry Carmen, but I'm not going to get to the meeting on time. There was a delay coming into the airport and I've just missed my connection. If I'm lucky, I'll get a seat on the flight that leaves in half an hour.

- Don't worry, as long as you're here for the afternoon session, it doesn't matter too much.

- Thanks. I'll let you know if I don't manage to catch the flight, otherwise expect to see me about 12:30 - in time for lunch.

- I need an international driving licence to drive here?

- I like to travel by sea in good weather. When the sea is rough, I don't feel quite well.

- I was lucky I never suffered from seasickness.

- Good for you. On board a big liner one never feels sea-sick.

- You never can tell. Once I booked the passage on the day the ship sailed off. The weather was fine. The sea was calm. I enjoyed the voyage.

- Have you ever travelled by sea in stormy weather?

- That's what I was about to tell you. The weather changed for the worse. The sea was rough. Anyhow I was not sea-sick.

- Maybe.

- Do you suffer from sea-sickness?

- Так. Коли море бурхливе, мене закачує.

- I was lucky. I never felt sea-sick.

- You never can tell. You may book the passage in good weather and then the weather will change for the worse.
