2. Grunge

The nineties brought us nu-wave rave, complete with neon trousers and shell-suits, which people soon realized was a stupid look. However, it also brought us Kurt Cobain, and with that, a look that was adopted by millions of people for years following. Long, lank hair, knitted jumpers with holes in and scruffy jeans became the uniform of choice for grunge-lovers.

1. Hippies

One of the most iconic looks of all time would have to be that of the hippy. Immortalized by The Beatles, Twiggy, and anyone that went to Woodstock, this look was all about color, flower power, corduroys and looking laid back, man.

Honorary Mentions

Goths

Nobody really knows where Goths came from – they just happened. They’ve always been around in some shape of form and they probably always will be. Just look for the black nail polish, crucifix, bat tattoos, long dark hair and Cradle of Filth t-shirt.

Metallers

Metallers are a bit smarter than grunge, and more colorful than Goths. They love to thrash out at rock concerts, only ever wear band t-shirts, have very long hair and wear a chain on their jeans. They started out in the 80s and early 90s thanks to ACDC and Metallica, and you’ll find them at the front of most mosh pits round the world, drinking – and spilling – cheap beer from a plastic cup.

Customs And Travel Information

This section tells you what you can expect when you travel across the UK border, and what you must do if you want to travel to, from or through the UK.

The information here is for all travellers, including UK passport holders, residents and short-term visitors.

We are responsible for protecting the UK border so that authorised travellers and legitimate goods can pass freely. We do this through the work of our visa staff overseas, and the immigration and customs checks carried out by our border force at ports and airports.

If you are making a short-term visit to the UK, the section on Visitors' rights and responsibilities will tell you whether you can do business while you are here, what medical treatment is available to you, and whether you will need to register with the police.

This section explains how you can pass through the UK when travelling on to another country, describes the 'transit without visa' concession and the direct airside transit visa, and tells you which documents you will need.

Customs

This section explains the restrictions on items that you can bring into the UK, and how to go through customs controls at the UK border.

If you are planning to travel into or out of the UK, there are rules about what goods you can bring with you without paying duty or value added tax (VAT) here. Some items are also banned or restricted by law. These restrictions apply even if you are a UK citizen who is returning from abroad.

There are heavy penalties for smuggling, so:

never carry anything into the UK for someone else;

never bring banned goods into the UK; if you are driving, make sure that everyone travelling with you knows which goods are banned or restricted – if you smuggle goods into the UK in a car, our officers may seize the car;

if you are in doubt, speak to an officer in the red channel or use the red point phone; and do not smuggle an animal into the UK – it could be carrying rabies. A pet may be tame, but rabies is a killer.
