OVERVIEW: Port comprises South Harbour, Manila International

Container Terminal (MICT) and North Harbour. Handles containers, general,

Ro-Ro and passengers.

LOCATION: On the west coast of Luzon Island in Manila Bay.

CHARTS: BA Charts No. 976, 3931, 3932 and 4491.

PORT LIMITS: Manila Harbour is defined as the area of Manila Bay

bounded by a line extending from Vitas Estero due west to the intersection

with a line running 180_(T) to Sangley Point Light, then 180_(T) towards

Sangley Point Light.

letter P painted in red on the bow.

Pilot boards foreign vessels outside the breakwater, interisland vessels at

Buoy No. 1, near the entrance to Pasig River, and container vessels bound

for MICT at position Lat. 14_ 36' 15.0" N, Long. 120_ 53' 50.0" E.

2. MUMBAI

MUMBAI (formerly Bombay): 18_ 54' N 072_ 49' E

OVERVIEW: India’s principal port, situated in a natural, deep-water,

sheltered harbour, protected by Konkan mainland to the east and the island

of Mumbai on the west.

It consists of three main berthing areas and two tanker terminals; and

handles general cargo, containers, bulk, heavy-lift, iron and steel, forest

products, fruit and foodstuffs.

LOCATION: On the west coast of the state of Maharashtra, on the

mid-west coast of the country.

wreck removal expenses and pollution damage caused by spillage of oil or

any hazardous and noxious substance. This must be issued by a P&I Club

which is a member of an International Group of P&I Club or a club duly

approved by the Central Government. Any vessel that fails to produce the

required insurance cover shall not be allowed to enter the port.

DENSITY: The port of Mumbai is essentially a salt water port and major

fluctuations in the density occur on account of tide. Density varies mostly in

monsoon period June to September. Sea water temperature 18 – 23_C

throughout the year.

RESTRICTIONS: According to state of tide and draft. Mumbai Channel

subject to siltation.

Drafts: Vessels with draft up to 11.8 m. shall be permitted subject to HW

being 3.6 m. and above. The corresponding HW height shall be taken into

account for vessels with draft 11.2 – 11.8 m.

Locks: Entrance lock to Indira Dock length 228.6 m., width 30.5 m. Vessels

dock and undock from about 3 hours before high water to half an hour before

high water.

Bridges: None.

ARRIVAL: Vessel is considered to have ‘‘arrived’’ when Pilot is embarked

and/or when vessel is required to anchor outside pilotage area awaiting a

suitable tide, as in the case of large tankers and has reported to VTS.

PILOTAGE: Compulsory for all power-driven merchant vessels of 100 n.t.

and over to have a Pilot on board to proceed north of pilot station. Such

vessels may not enter, leave or shift berths in this area without a Pilot or

Harbour Official on board.

The pilotage limit outward is marked by a line drawn E–W through Prongs

Lighthouse.

Pilots now embark/disembark inbound/outbound vessels only from/in a pilot

launch usually painted white with the legend ‘‘Pilot’’ on the side. During the

SW monsoon season a long swell prevails at the port entrance and it is

imperative that vessels should give a proper lee, as the pilot launch may

experience difficulties in coming alongside. During such times, Masters will

be advised by the Pilot vessel which side to make a lee. During the early

part of the SW monsoon, when the wind is south of SW, the sea runs from

the south and Masters are advised to keep their ships heading east when

making a lee for the Pilot.

Pilots will board in approximate position Lat. 18_ 51' N, Long. 072_ 49.5' E,

from a white pilot launch with the legend ‘‘Pilot’’ on either side.

A radar equipped Vessel Traffic Management System listens on VHF

Channel 16 and works on Channel 12.

Minimum 24 hours’ notice to Agents and Harbour Master, Mumbai, through

Mumbai Radio (VWB).

Mumbai Port Trust operates a VHF service, call sign ‘‘Prongs’’, on VHF

Channels 16 or 12, Port Signal Station on VHF Channel 12. VHF

Channel 14 used as a change-over channel.

Prongs Lighthouse.

2. ‘‘Jawahar Dweep Island’’ for Marine Oil Terminal.

Inbound vessels are required to contact Harbour Control/Prongs

Lighthouse on VHF Channel 12 to report ETA and receive instructions.

Facilities: Tata jetty berthing face length 188 m., handles bulk coal at

1,500 tonnes/day and fuel oil for the Tata Power Station.

Bulk coal is discharged to lighter barges at the anchorage by

self-discharging vessels.

3. KHOLMSK

KHOLMSK, Sakhalin Is: 47_ 03' N 142_ 03' E

OVERVIEW: The port is open for navigation all the year round, however

due to its position, size and weather conditions in the area, cannot be used

as a sheltering port. The port is divided into three parts; the Kovsh (a basin)

and the Commercial and Fishing Harbours. The Commercial Harbour is

situated in the centre of the port area. Cargo berths are situated in the Kovsh

in the southern part of the harbour.

LOCATION: On the western coast of Sakhalin Island, in the Tartarsky

Strait of the Japan Sea and at the head of Nevelskoy Bay.

CHARTS: BA Charts No. 1801, 2161 and 3340.

PORT LIMITS: The outer roads of the port are bounded by an arc of

0.7 n.m. radius, the centre of which is marked with a light located on the

Southern Mole of the Commercial Harbour.

PILOTAGE: Compulsory. Pilots should be ordered 2 hours in advance

from the port dispatcher. Pilot meets vessel in the outer roads, in position

Lat. 47_ 03.48' N, Long. 142_ 01.93' E. In the event of bad weather, when Pilot

is unable to come on board, vessel should follow in the wake of pilot boat.

BERTHS: Two general cargo berths depth 8.0 m. alongside, max. draft

6.0 m., LOA 105 m. and beam 20 m. equipped to handle general and bulk

cargoes, metals, timber, food products, etc., as well as passenger traffic.

CARGO HANDLING FACILITIES: Available in addition to inter-port

transport facilities. Enclosed warehouses and open concrete floor sheds

available.

4. HAI PHONG

HAI PHONG: 20_ 52' N 106_ 41' E

OVERVIEW: The port has modern facilities and equipment and sufficient

infrastructure to meet all international modes of transport and trade.

LOCATION: 100 km. east of Hanoi on the Cua Cam River, one of the

main channels of the Red River Estuary.

Stevedores work throughout 24 hours in four shifts, 0000 – 0600,
