THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The United States of America is another important English-speaking country. In the East it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and in the West - by the Pacific Ocean. It consists of fifty different states joined together under one government.

At first it consisted of only 13 states on the Atlantic coast of America that had been English colonies, but they had to fight against England and in 1776 became an independent country. As time went on, new states were organized on the territory to the West. Much land had been taken away from the Indians, some of the territories were bought from France in 1803, others taken away from Mexico. The two states that became members of the United States last, in 1958 and 1959, were Alaska and Hawaii. Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Alaska, a great territory in the Northwest of the American continent, was bought from Russia in 1867 for 7 million dollars.

The USA is governed by Congress and by the President. Congress consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The President, who is also head of the government and commander-in-chief of all the armed forces, is elected every four years.

The capital of the United States is Washington. It is situated on the Potomac River not far from the Atlantic coast. It is in the District of Columbia, which does not belong to any one state, but to all the states. The city itself is named after George Washington - the first president of the United States. Washington is not a very large city. Such cities as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia, Detroit, New Orleans and some others are larger.

The United States is largely an urban nation.

After the mid-1930s there was a decline in the number of persons living on farms. A continued large-scale migration of population from the rural areas has been one of the major population movements of the 20th century.

Approximately two-thirds of the inhabitants live in urban areas and a considerable proportion of the remainder live in close relation to a large city.
