Дисертацію присвячено комплексному аналізу парадигматичних, синтагматичних та епідигматичних особливостей когнітивних дієслів англійської мови як окремої лексико-семантичної групи в складі лексико-семантичного поля когніції. Здійснено інвентаризацію та розглянуто структуру ЛСГ когнітивних дієслів, в межах якої змодельовано парадигматичні лексико-семантичні відношення між конституентами із застосуванням семасіологічного та ономасіологічного підходів до лексики. У тісному зв’язку з парадигматикою з’ясовано синтагматичні особливості когнітивних дієслів, які відображені в особливостях валентності, сполучуваності та рольової семантики, а також епідигматичні відношення когнітивних дієслів, в основі яких лежить регулярна семантична деривація. Застосований системний підхід дозволив окреслити тенденції у розвитку когнітивних дієслів англійської мови як динамічної системи, що відображає породжувальний потенціал ментального лексикону.

Диссертация посвящена комплексному анализу парадигматических, синтагматических и эпидигматических особенностей когнитивных глаголов английского языка как отдельной лексико-семантической группы в составе лексико-семантического поля когниции. Инвентаризирована и изучена структура ЛСГ когнитивных глаголов, в рамках которой смоделированы парадигматические лексико-семантические отношения между конституентами с применением семасиологического и ономасиологического подходов к лексике. В тесной святи с парадигматикою установлены синтагматические особенности когнитивных глаголов, которые отображены в особенностях валентности, сочетаемости, ролевой семантики, и эпидигматические отношения, основаны на регулярной семантической деривации. Примененный системный подход позволил очертить тенденции в развитии когнитивных глаголов английского языка как динамической системы, отображающей порождаемый потенциал ментального лексикона.

The thesis is concerned with a comprehensive study of paradigmatic, syntagmatic and epidigmatic properties of English cognitive verbs as a self-contained lexical-semantic group within the lexical-semantic field of cognition. А detailed inventory of the cognitive verbs has been drawn and the constituents of the lexical- semantic group have been examined in terms of paradigmatic lexical-semantic relations via implementing both semasiological and onomasiological approaches to the study of lexis. Closely related to the paradigmatics are syntagmatic properties of the cognitive verbs manifested in the peculiarities of valency, collocability and frame structure. The epidigmatic or motivational relations of the cognitive verbs as a third dimension of the lexical system have been studied in terms of semantic change. The composition of the thesis corresponds to its objective and tasks.
Chapter 1 provides an overview of the subject of the research from the historical perspective and elucidates the theoretical and methodological framework of the work. In particular, the field approach and functional-lexicometric model of the mental lexicon are outlined as the theoretical background of the research.
Chapter 2 presents an inventory of the lexical-semantic group of English cognitive verbs followed by the analysis of their paradigmatic lexical-semantic properties. The analysis has been conducted on the basis of explanatory English language dictionaries and the WordNet electronic thesaurus accepting the lexical-semantic variant as a unit of research. As a result, the interdependence has been established between the paradigmatic relations of hyponymy, synonymy, polysemy, antonymy, and entailment of the cognitive verbs reinforced by their quantitative data.
Chapter 3 focuses on the combinatory properties of English cognitive verbs juxtaposed with the paradigmatic ones. In this respect, the aspectual characteristics and functioning of the cognitive verbs in the context revealed on the basis of English language corpora have been given special attention. The deep structure scheme of the cognitive verbs underlying the surface structure S + V + O ± D reflects a deep case inventory of their obligatory and optional valencies. The conducted corpus analysis resulted in the establishment of lexical collocations of the cognitive verbs which reflect their subliminal meanings.
Chapter 4 presents an attempt at the systematization of the epidigmatic properties of English cognitive verbs as characterized by intense polysemy. The processes of metaphorisation, metonymisation, generalization and specialization of meaning have been highlighted as semantically relevant in the development of English cognitive lexis. Patterns of regular semantic derivation typical of the cognitive verbs have been provided. The conceptual analysis revealed a subtle interplay of source and target domains typical of the cognitive verbs uncovering both salient and covert motives of their semantic derivation.
The suggested systemic approach displayed diverse tendencies underlying the development of English cognitive verbs as a non-discrete dynamic system, and thus reflected the generative potential of the mental lexicon.
