Carbon Cycle

Like materials such as water and nitrogen, carbon cycles through ecosystems. Carbon is found to be utilized for life processes. Carbon enters the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide gas. Carbon dioxide is reported to contribute to the atmosphere by three main routes: volcanism, sedimentation of calcium carbonate and metamorphism.

Among the natural processes that release carbon dioxide are the respiration of animals and plants.

Because animals cannot synthesize carbohydrates for themselves, they depend on food from plants or other animals for the energy they need to live. For the stored energy to retrieve the organism takes in oxygen and, in its cells, combines oxygen with carbohydrate. This chemical reaction that releases the energy stored by photosynthesis is called respiration.

Plants use carbon dioxide in the process of photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is known to be the process by which green organisms use chlorophyll and the energy from sunlight to make carbohydrates - organic matter -out of carbon dioxide and water.

The carbohydrates provide the energy needed to power the biosphere.

Photosynthesis and respiration appear to be reciprocal. They link carbon dioxide, oxygen, and carbohydrate. There is need for us to say that photosynthesis and respiration are vehicles for cycling carbon dioxide and oxygen between the atmosphere, the oceans, the land surface, and the biosphere.

Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, - coal and oil - also add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere at a fast rate to affect global climate and the biosphere.
