Introduction

Slang consists of a lexicon of non-standard words and phrases in a given language. Usage of these words and phrases is typically associated with the unusual concept of words and is connected to the people of some individual professions. Mostly by the slang people can understand from what class the speaker is or what type of employees they are. Usually every country has its own slang. Also it should be said that slang is nearly connected not only to the work and class, but also to the part of the world, country etc. It is often difficult to differentiate slang from colloquialisms and even more standard language. It is caused by the nearest impact into the language. And with some time pass slang words and phrases become totally part of the standard language. Words such as "spurious" and "strenuous" were once slang, though they are now accepted as standard, even high register words. The literature on slang even discusses mainstream acknowledgment of a slang term as changing its status as true slang, because it has been accepted by the media and is thus no longer the special insider speech of a particular group.

[The first recorded uses of slang in Britain occurred in the 16th century in the plays of Thomas Dekker, Thomas Middleton and William Shakespeare. The first books containing slang also appeared around this time: Robert Copland's, “The hue way to the Spytlellhous”, was a dialogue in verse between Copland and the porter of St Bartholomew's hospital, which included Thieves Cant. The Caveat contained stories of vagabond life, a description of their society and techniques, a taxonomy of rogues, and a short canting dictionary which was later reproduced in other works.

Slang is said to be short-lived. This, of course, is not true for all slang words. Some were created a very long time ago and are still defined as slang. Notice, however, that the dates that are given in dictionaries prefer to written language, which most certainly means that the first occurrence of the respective words in spoken language was much earlier1].

In my work we are discussing how slang language could be understood and translated. Also we will analyze some interesting articles, which include the problem of understanding slang between different categories of people life aged people and teenagers.

The object of study is slang as a unique phenomenon of every language.

The subject of the research is slang, its types, ways of understanding it and the impact of slang on the common people in the English language.

The purpose of studying is to examine how slang could be found in books, in the language and to sort out if slang is good for the language or not.

The objectives of this research are the following:

  • to study literature references concerning slang,

  • to define slang phrases as a unique phenomenon of the English language,

  • to classify slang phrases,

  • to illustrate some of the features of words in a slang jargon,

  • to illustrate some situations and correspondence using slang,

  • to answer a questionnaire and reflect results into the diagrams.

Methods used in the research are comparative, theoretical, analysis, experimental.

Theoretical basis: Theoretical analysis of the literature showed that this issue was covered in the works of Gisle Andersen, Walter William Skeat, John Ayto, John Simpson, Ray Bradbury, L.N. Parkhomenko.

Practical value: The work material has a certain practical value and may be used in studying the speech in school clubs and at the lessons. Relevance of the research lies in the fact that the problem of the interaction of language and society cannot be solved without studying the functioning of vocabulary in different social background and occupation groups, without through analysis, it is necessary to study at the universities, as vocabulary knowledge is required for successful understanding of contemporary periodicals and literature. This is also required in a special course of slang translation, which may be introduced at the translation department of the university.

The structure of the research includes introduction, three chapters, conclusion, appendix and references.
