    1. Analysis of the questionnaire

I have made a questionnaire for the 10th form to test their knowledge of slang.

Test includes three parts. In the first part, students should match slang words to their translations. The second task is to match the beginnings of slang metaphors to their endings. And in the last task students should match proverbs to their Russian equivalents.

As a result we have the following:

Diag. 2

This diagram shows the data about the percentage result of test. Test includes 21 items.

According to the test some interesting information have been found :

The percentage of all test is 80,9%;

The results for the first task are 76,7%;

Second task was done with 67,8%;

Last task had the result of 99%.

In references you can see the other diagrams for all the 3 tasks. One diagram for the each task shows how much students were good at it. Also there were 6 students from 18, who have achieved 100% of right questions.

Conclusion

Due to my research slang occupies only 1% in all language. Nowadays philologists pay more attention to study slang. Also it should be mentioned that slang is well-used in modern literature to show us some interesting pictures or to describe human emotions.

The last part of the investigation can show that slang is also used by the modern teenagers with each day come. Approximately 8 teenagers out of 50 understand English slang and will be able to speak to the international English groups.

Conclusion

“Collins English Dictionary” describes slang as: "Vocabulary that is not appropriate to the standard form of a language or to formal contexts, may be restricted as to social status or distribution, and is characteristically more metaphorical and transitory than standard language". This can be used like the main description of the slang.

The results of my investigation are the following. I have:

  • examined how slang could be found in books, in the language;

  • sorted out if slang is good for the language or not;

  • studied literature references concerning slang;

  • defined slang phrases as a unique phenomenon of the English language;

  • classified slang phrases;

  • illustrated some of the features of words in a slang jargon;

  • illustrated some situations and correspondence using slang;

  • answered a questionnaire;

  • reflected results in the diagrams.

Slang is said to be short-lived. This, of course, is not true for all slang words. Some were created a very long time ago and are still defined as slang. Notice, however, that the dates that are given in dictionaries prefer to written language, which most certainly means that the first occurrence of the respective words in spoken language was much earlier. Other old slang words would seem hopelessly outdated if uttered by somebody today. Still other words, which were originally referred to as slang, have been adopted in the standard language but are labeled ‘informal’, such as the short forms super in the sense of ‘wonderful’ and telly for ‘television’, to mention but two.
