Your Career Plan

We will look at four steps in planning a career: choosing a career, making a plan, preparing for a career, and getting your first job.

People choose careers for many reasons. One person might like helping others and decide to be a doctor. Another might be good at technical sciences and decide to be an engineer.

How do you choose a career? You can talk to people. You can look for career planning resources. Career planning resources are books and information about jobs. You can find these resources at the library. Spend a lot of time getting information; it will help you make better choices.

You have chosen a career – now you need to make a plan. For example, maybe you want a career in technology. But you are not ready to work as an engineer yet. First, you need to make a list. Here is an example of a plan:

  1. Get resources: read books and magazines about jobs in technology.

  2. Take special computer courses.

  3. Get a part-time job working with skilled engineers or become an apprentice – a person who works for a qualified engineer in order to learn a profession.

The next step is preparation. For this step, you start doing the things on your list. For example, look for resources. Take classes and do your best. Get a part-time job or become an apprentice. Be a good employee and ask your employer for a reference – a letter about your qualifications.

Now it’s time to get the job! You’ve gone to university and you’ve earned a degree. You have some job experience and a good reference from your employer. First, put it all in a resume – a list of information about you. Make it clear and easy to read. Then start reading job aids (an announcement in a newspaper, on television, or on a poster about a job). Call people and make appointments. Bring your resume. Soon you’ll have your ideal job.
