The gerund as attribute

TASK 10. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct infinitive or gerund form using them in the function of an attribute. Add prepositions wherever necessary.

1. It was very kind of you to have taken the trouble of bringing me this book. I have always wanted to read it.

2. John’s idea to start looking for our family roots looked very appealing.

3. There was very little hope of seeing my stolen car again.

4. Stuart was so excited that he had to make an effort to control his voice.

5. Georgina was a most startling woman to look at.

6. You should have seen my mother’s surprise at seeing me at the doorstep.

7. My grandmother is not an easy person to give presents to. You never know if she likes them or not.

8. It’s wonderful that we have an older man with plenty of experience to turn to for advice and help.

9. At the dinner party Mr. Stonebridge had a pleasure of meeting the new young neighbour who he found very interesting.

10. Unfortunately the young doctor had no experience of performing such difficult operations and they had to send for the local surgeon.

4	Для подростков идея получить так много денег и таким легким путем была совершенно новой и поэтому захватывающей. Они не осознавали, что мысль получить деньги преступным путем была вложена в их головы хитрым и жестоким человеком.	For the teenagers the idea of getting so much money and in such an easy way was new and that is why exciting. They didn’t realize that the thought of getting money in a criminal way was implanted in their heads by a sly and cruel person.
5	Самый эффективный метод запоминания английских неправильных глаголов – выписать их на карточки и повторять их регулярно несколько раз в неделю.	The most effective way of remembering English irregular verbs is to write (writing) them down on cards and revise (revising) them regularly several times a week.
6	Вы, несомненно, должны использовать этот шанс побывать в Англии, даже если вам придется для этого сдать все экзамены досрочно.	You must certainly use this chance of visiting England even if you have to take all the exams ahead of schedule.
7	Вы видите какой-нибудь способ уменьшить риск данной ситуации? Мы, конечно же, приняли все необходимые меры против похищения ребенка, но эта опасность еще существует.	Do you see any way of reducing (minimizing, lessening) the risk of the situation? We certainly have taken all the necessary measures (precautions) against the child being kidnapped but this danger still exists.
8	Какой смысл их ждать? Они уже опоздали на полчаса. Если мы будем их каждый раз ждать, мы, в конце концов, выработаем у них привычку всегда опаздывать.	What is the point in waiting for them? (Is there any sense in waiting for them?) They are already half an hour late. If we wait for them every time, we’ll eventually develop their habit of being always late (they will acquire a taste of always being late).
9	У вас есть право молчать и не отвечать на вопросы полиции, пока не приедет ваш адвокат. Но я вам не советую пользоваться этим правом, если вы хотите оказать нам помощь в поисках преступника. Ваше право хранить молчание может оказать нам плохую услугу.	You have the right to keep silence and not to answer the policemen’s questions till your lawyer comes. But I do not advise you to use this right if you want to help us find the criminal. You right to keep silent may do us a bad turn.
10	Стелла видела, что от нее ждут ответа, но не сделала ни малейшего усилия порыться в своей памяти. Она даже перестала притворяться, что всякое умственное усилие было для нее невозможно.	Stella saw that she was being expected to give an answer but she didn’t make the slightest effort to rake (rack/ search/ rummage) her memory. She even stopped pretending that every mental effort was impossible for her.
11	У вас была реальная возможность улучшить рабочую обстановку в вашем отделе. Почему вы не воспользовались ею?	You had a real chance of improving the working atmosphere in your department. Why didn’t you use it?
12	Будьте осторожны, когда будете задавать мистеру Блумфилду вопросы. Не касайтесь его научной работы. Если он садится на своего конька, нет никакого способа его остановить.	Be careful while asking Mr. Bloomfield questions. Don’t start him on (touch on) his scientific work. If he saddles (mounts; gets going) his hobby-horse, there is no way of stopping him.
13	Матильда непредсказуемая женщина. Никогда невозможно предугадать, что она сделает или скажет в следующую минуту. Но зато с ней всегда интересно.	Matilda is an unpredictable woman. It is never possible to predict what she will do or say the next minute. But on the other hand, she is always interesting to be with.
