“Editing is reviewing and changing a document by making additions, deletions, or other changes to conform to some agreed-upon standard.

Editing is commonly done to all documents for publication or public presentation.”

Editing is the process of preparing language, images, or sound through correction, condensation, organization, and other modifications in various media.

A person who edits is called an editor.

Purpose of Editing

“Mainly to give Clear & Accurate presentation”

1. To identify any errors in the document/script and provide suggestions to the author

2. To check if the document/script meets any standards specified; these standards might be quality standards or client-specified standards.

3. To increase the effectiveness of the document.

Areas of Editing

The editor checks for the following aspects in a document:

1.Spelling and Grammar

2.Usage of Words

3.Document Style: To check the tone and the tense used in the document and also to check whether the template style is according to the document requirements.

4.Coherence/Logic: To ensure that there are no gaps in information flow between consecutive statements.

5.Technical accuracy: To ensure that all the information provided in the document is technically accurate.

6.Completeness: To check whether the document is complete according to the scope defined and the content presented.

Editing for Newspaper, Journal and Magazines

Newspaper :- Newspaper is called literature in a hurry especially in the evening, when the news development gathers momentum. So, generally editors or sub-editors gets very little time for editing manuscript. So, they provide information in less analytical point of view.

Journals :- Journals are serious writings with more focus on academics, research and subject oriented. Basically journals are not more attractive. Journal editors/writers have rich content than magazines on a particular subject. For journals editing, editors have very limited scope of editing since they are subject specific written by learned people of that subject. We find very less photographs in journals. Always comes along with references/bibliography.

Magazines :- A little subjective approach is given in magazine with more background information because they get sufficient time for editing. Magazine editor presents a story or article in a beautiful way like along with visuals, graphics, statistics and more decorative because they have more time. They also give supporting stories with new story. Magazine editor try to give comprehensive information.

Basically, the editor performs the following functions:

1. Searches for factual errors and corrects them.

2. Guards against contradictions and edits the story to correct them.

3. Makes the copy conform to the newspaper style.

4. Trim the story to the space ordered.

5. Guards against libel, double meaning and bad taste.

6. Dresses (decorates) the story with typographic devices such as subheads.

7. Writes the headlines for the story.
