18.Sd based on the omission of the logically important parts of the utterance.

Ellipsis - is the omition of a word necessary for the complete syntactical construction of a sentence, but not necessary for understanding. The stylistic function of ellipsis used in author's narration is to change its tempo, to connect its structure.

e. g. You feel all right? Anything wrong or what?

An elliptical sentence refers to sentences with information missing. This form does not require an ellipsis. These sentences are grammatically correct only if the necessary information to understand the sentence has been supplied previously or is clear from the context of the sentence.

-What does intransitive mean?-Within direct object.

Break-in-the narrative is a stylistic device based on a sudden breaking off in the midst of a sentence as if from inability for private communication. ▲ – Martin didn’t shoot himself. – Martin didn’t - . – Of course, he didn’t. I shoot him. Expresses the surprise of the character

Gap-sentence link is a way of connecting two sentences seemingly unconnected and leaving it to the reader’s imagination to grasp the idea implied. ▲ She and that fellow ought to be the sufferers, and they were in Italy.

19. Sd based on syntactic repetition.

Repetition is an EMs of l-ge used when the speaker is under the stress of strong emotion. When used as a stylistic device, repetition aims at logical emphasis, to fix the attention on the key-word of the utterance. Repetition is classified according to compositional patterns: it may be linking or reduplicative (...The smile extended into a laugh. The laugh into a row. And the raw became general.),synonymical (The poetry of earth is never dead. The poetry of earth is seazing never), framing (fr makes the whole utterance more compact & more complete. Fr is most effective in singling out paragraphs).

Anadiplosis: the last word or phrase of one utterance is repeated at the beginning of another, thus hooking the 2 parts together. The writer, instead of moving on, seems to double back on his tracks & pick up his last word. Chain of repetition/anadiplosis. Any repetition causes some slight modification of meaning, a modification suggested by a noticeable change in the intonation with which the repeated word is pronounced.

Functions:-to intensify the utterance. Intensification is the direct outcome of the use of the EMs employed in ordinary intercourse; but when used in other compositional patterns, the immediate emotional charge is greatly suppressed & is replaced by a purely aesthetic aim. The repetition of the whole line in its full form requires interpretation (superlinear analysis).

Chiasmus (S-P-O – O-P-S) belongs to the group of SDs based on the repetition of a syntactical pattern, but it has a cross order of words & phrases. The structure of two successive sentences or parts of a sentence may be described as reversed parallel construction, the word-order of one of the sentences being inverted as compared with that of the other.

Enumeration is a styl-c device by which separate things, objects, phenomena, properties, actions sre named 1 by 1, so they produce the chain. Most expressive enum-n are naming things belonging to dif-t classes, layers, concepts and so on.

Polysyndeton is the reverse device char-d by the abandance of conjunctions and prepositions before each component part. (the heaviest rain and snow and hail)
