I. Identification and reproduction of intonation patterns.

Read the following conversational context according to the intonation marks:

  • Do you think it’ll take the watchmaker /long to put my watch /right?

  • What’s \wrong with it?

  • It hasn’t been keeping good \time /lately. Sometimes it goes /fast and sometimes it goes \slow.

  • Don’t you think it depends on the /weather?

  • I don’t \know. I think there’s something wrong with the \/spring.

II. Use of rhythmic structures.

a) State what rhythmic structure is prompted by the lexical composition of the following phrases.

- In the ordinary accepted sense

- Impressed by their novelty and brilliance

  • One of life’s ironical adjustments

b) Read the following utterances according to the suggested rhythmic structure.

The landscape doesn’t change throughout the country. (3 stress-rhythm)

I haven’t yet planned my future profession. (4 stress-rhythm)

III. Use of pitch contours*.

a) Use a casual attitude in the reaction.

  • I must be going, Betty.

  • Good-bye, then.

b) Use the imperative as a request.

  • Is there anything I can do to help?

  • Give me a lift to the station.

Iy. Auditory memory check.

Act out the following situational context by analogy with Text .44 “At the Seaside”. (London Course).

When you tired of the town, go to the country for a day or a week-end. You can wander about in the woods, pick up mushrooms and berries and enjoy yourself at any time of the day. A glass of fresh milk and a bowl of sweet berries will do you a lot of good.

*A pitch contour is an overall tone pattern of an intonation group. It is formed by the type of Prehead, Head and nuclear tone.

e.g. That’s the 'best ·news I’ve heard for a \long time.

The pitch contour of this statement is defined as a high falling contour with a normal prehead and a stepping head.

II. Use of rhythmic structures.

  • Studying and practising two foreign languages

b) Read the following utterances according to the suggested rhythmic structure.

I’m looking forward to a change. (2 stress-rhythm)

They both have a lot on their mind. (3 stress-rhythm)

III. Use of pitch contours*.

a) Use the appropriate form of gratitude.

Waiter – Here’s your coffee.

Visitor – Thank you.

b) Use a normal request in the reactuin.

  • It’s rather stuffy in here.

  • Open the window.
