6 .5 Secondary surveillance radar

6.5.1 The following phrases together with their meanings are instructions which may be given by controllers to pilots regarding the operation of SSR transponders.

P hrase Meaning

S QUAWK (code) Set the code as instructed

CONFIRM SQUAWK Confirm mode and code set on the transponder

RESET (mode) (code) Reselect assigned mode and code

SQUAWK IDENT Operate the "IDENT" feature

SQUAWK MAYDAY Select emergency code

SQUAWK STAND BY Select the stand by feature

SQUAWK CHARLIE Select pressure altitude transmission feature

CHECK ALTIMETER SETTING AND Check pressure setting and confirm present level

CONFIRM level

STOP SQUAWK CHARLIE WRONG Deselect pressure altitude transmission feature

INDICATION because of faulty operation

*VERIFY LEVEL Check and confirm your level

CHECK ID SQUAWK For a mode S equipped aircraft, check the setting of

the aircraft identification feature

* Used to verify the accuracy of the Mode C derived level information displayed to the controller.

6 .6 Radar assistance to aircraft with radiocommunications failure

When a controller suspects that an aircraft is able to receive but not transmit messages, the radar may be used to confirm that the pilot has received instructions.

N ote.An aircraft experiencing a radiocommunications failure is expected to select SSR code 7600.

6.7 Alerting phraseologies

6.7.1 In the event that a minimum safe altitude warning (MSAW) is generated in respect of a controlled flight, the air traffic controller will inform the aircraft and issue appropriate instructions.
