SUBWAY: PROSPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT

  1. It is planned to build underground systems in cities with a population of 1.5-2 million, providing a 400,000 passenger stream in an hour is ensured.

  2. Subway now totalling 370 kilometres has been functioning in eight Soviet cities: Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Tbilisi, Baku, Tashkent, Yerevan and Kharkov.

  3. The Eleventh Five-Year Plan envisages the construction of a hundred kilometres more underground routes.

  4. High-carrying capacity is typical of the Soviet subway system. Its annual capacity in Moscow totals 2,130 million people. High quality technical equipment of the Moscow subway allows it to run trains with less than a minute interval at an average speed of 41 kilometres an hour in rush hours.

  5. Soviet specialists of subway construction have been assisting their colleagues in many cities of Europe for many; years. Subway builders in Prague have received all kinds of assistance" from their Soviet counterparts: joint design of the project, supply of drifting technology6 and rolling stock. Besides, Czechoslovak operational workers did their practical work in Moscow.

  6. Soviet engineers are now working in Culcutta where the first in the country underground line is under construction. Soviet assistance ranges from designing the project to training personnel and a supply of Soviet technology. Later on that experience will be used to make subway lines in more Indian cities.
