THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS

MA IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

This MA programme offered by the Centre for Development Studies is conceived as an alternative to programmes which turn out narrow specialists unaware of the broader context of development, or, conversely, produce generalists lacking any concrete skills or area of specialised knowledge. It is built around an interdisciplinary core course covering theory, strategy and issues in development. Students also take four modules from a wide range of specialist options in such areas as rural development; women and development; tropical public health engineering; development administration; business, state and world economy; and development economics; as others in geography, education or health administration. Finally, an area of particular concern is explored in depth in a dissertation. The course is designed for graduates in the social sciences, but practical experience of problems of developing countries is also taken into consideration. It provides an opportunity for those active in the field to upgrade their skills and consolidate their knowledge, as well as a chance for those with a strong interest in the subject area to deepen their understanding of development issues. For more information apply to: Dr. C Baylies, Director, Centre for Development Studies, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK MA IN THE POLITICS OF INTERNATIONAL RESOURCES AND DEVELOPMENT This MA programme offered by the Department of Politics provides an opportunity for analysis of recent changes in the international political economy and an understanding of their relationship to key social and political features of developing countries. It thus links the fields of international politics and political economy of development. It focuses on resource allocation; the relationship between state and economy; the role of multinational corporations and international agencies; and questions of food security and sustainable development. It is suitable for students seeking training from a political perspective in development theory and policy or for those working in ministries or NGOs requiring further expertise in the management of state and business relations or in handling resource, environmental or food security policy. For more information apply to: Dr R bush, Department of Politics, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK A limited number of grants and scholarships, which either fully or partially offset the cost of academic fees, are offered by the University of Leeds to overseas students on a competitive basis.
