Важнейшей приметой современности (по сравнению с концом 80-х годов) является типологическое расширение изданий газетного типа - как общероссийских, так и региональных. В связи с заметной тенденцией – расширением изданий газетного типа – положение газеты среди других городских масс-медиа в последние несколько лет заметно упрочилось. Краткий обзор городского рынка печатных изданий газетного типа не позволяет выделить тенденции его становления, но можно сделать некоторые выводы:
- издания газетного типа составляют большинство в системе городских СМИ;
- круг общественно-политических газет заметно расширился по сравнению с концом 80-х - началом 90-х годов; - заметно увеличилось число газет информационно-коммерческого характера, они преобладают по тиражу над другими типами газет, самый высокий тираж имеют бесплатные и наиболее дешевые издания;
- большинство городских газет реализует модель массовой прессы; за исключением узкоспециализированных газет, большинство изданий тематически не ориентированы, стремясь удовлетворить разнообразные информационные потребности читателей, они обращаются к разнообразной тематике, особенно заметен интерес к темам истории и культуры города, - в большинстве изданий в качестве учредителя указывается частное лицо;
- для повышения рейтинга среди населения общественно-политическими изданиями активно используется тактика «три в одном» (разные виды издания выходят под «вывеской» одного издания).
В целом состояние городской прессы Тольятти можно охарактеризовать как период становления. Но у нее имеются большие потенциальные возможности максимально закрыть «ниши» в информационном пространстве города. Благоприятные условия для устойчивого развития городской печати создает высокий экономический потенциал города – финансирование ВАЗа. Заметная тенденция последних лет – объединение разнообразных изданий под эгидой и финансовой поддержкой ВАЗа (ассоциация «АВТОВАЗ» – 21 век» объединяет печатные СМИ, радио- и телеканалы).
