  42. The development of the Harmonized System (HS) as a multipurpose goods nomenclature was one of the best achievements of the World Customs Organization (WCO). The HS is now used all over the world, in millions of transactions every day, for a variety of purposes: customs tariffs, trade policy formulation, determination of the origin of the goods, etc.

  43. The HS uniform application (interpretation of the text) by all users is the key to its success. Misclassification can lead to loss of revenue, delays in clearance and evasion of trade control.

  44. The updating of the HS is a continuous process, requiring constant effort by the WCO in a rapidly changing trade environment. A considerable amount of time and resources have to be devoted to this work in order to take account of the latest development in technology, patterns of trade and special needs of HS users.

  45. The new version of the HS entered into force on 1 January 2012 and, at present, 81 Contracting Parties out of 144 are applying the 2012 version.

На международном конкурсе, который проходил в Женеве (Швейцария), известный отечественный производитель кофе - компания «Московская кофейня на паяхъ» удостоилась престижной международной награды – золотой медали «За качество». Такую награду кофейная компания из России получает впервые. К медали прилагаются соответствующие «аксессуары» - кубок и сертификат. Правда, увезти их на родину не удалось.

  1. Task 22. Work in groups. Imagine that you are working for a Customs telephone hot-line. Think of the questions you may receive from the callers. Take turns and ask another group. Prepare your own answers and decide in which group there are most competent customs officers.
