Each of the 6 main bodies of the un performs its own mission. The General Assembly is a sort of world parliament but it isn’t a (1) ... As it doesn’t make laws.

But its recommendations and advice are important indications of world opinion.

The Security Council is primarily responsible for (2) ... international peace and security. It tries to undertake some (3)... measures to avoid war conflicts and to (4)... peace and stability. Sometimes it may send observers’ missions to (5)... the process of disarmament or ceasing the fire.

The Economic and Social Council (6)... the economic and social work of the UN. Its five regional commissions promote economic development and ... economic relations in the regions.

The International Court of Justice settles disputes between countries. The Court also provides advisory opinion to the General Assembly and the Security Council.

5. Poster making and speaking

In this unit you are studying a new format of a poster

- it is used at presentations and conferences.

Task 9. Read the text about Posters below.

Posters are a special type of presentation. When well designed, they are not simply journal papers pasted onto boards. Rather, posters, when effectively designed, are something in between.

An effective poster is a visual communications tool

George Hess :: Kathryn Tosney :: Leon Liegel

An effective poster will help you ...

... engage colleagues in conversation.

... get your main point(s) across to as many people as possible.

An effective poster is ...

Focused

Focused on a single message.

Graphic

Lets graphs and images tell the story; uses text sparingly

Ordered

Keeps the sequence well-ordered and obvious.

An effective poster operates on multiple levels ...

- source of information

- conversation starter

- advertisement of your work

- summary of your work

An effective poster is not just a standard research paper stuck to a board. A poster uses a different, visual grammar. It shows, not tells.

Many ineffective posters suffer from easy-to-fix problems, including ...

objective(s) and main point(s) hard to find

text too small

poor graphics

poor organization
