8.1. How Competition Benefits Us All
8.2. Market Structure: How Many Buyers and Sellers?
In a competitive market, producers constantly strive to reduce their production costs to increase profits. The increased efficiency that allows them to reduce their costs also lets producers sell their goods at a lower price. Thus, by promoting efficiency, competition leads to lower prices.
Competition also motivates producers to improve the quality and increase the variety of goods and services. Consumers soon learn which brand offers the best value, bringing greater profits to that brand's firm than to its competitors. Similarly, producers in a competitive market must constantly look for new and attractive goods and services to win a larger share of the market.
As firms compete for the consumer's dollar in a market, their efforts lead to the production of a variety of higher-quality products at the lowest possible prices. And since everyone is a consumer, it follows that competition benefits everyone.
In the U.S. and other similar economic systems, consumers and producers exchange their goods and services in many competitive markets. Markets exist wherever people come together to buy and sell their goods and services. These exchanges occur freely and provide a fairly efficient way for people to conduct their business. In fact, take the number of purchases you made today, multiply it by the millions of people in the U.S., and you will have some idea of the number of business transactions that occur in American markets daily.
Economists often analyze the "structure" of markets. They do this by studying the number and the influence of buyers and sellers. In certain industries, such as automobile manufacturing, three or four large American firms and a few major foreign manufacturers meet the needs of millions of buyers. By contrast, the military aircraft industry consists of only a few manufacturers and buyers (such as the United States and a few foreign governments). In the stock and bond markets there are many buyers and sellers.
