Business administration faculty

1. Business Administration (BA) and Management are the effective organisation and direction of resources, including personnel, money, materials, and technology. Programmes in business and industrial administration are designed to give professional managers skills to carry out problem solving, long-term planning, and supervision of activities and employees. The ultimate aim of the courses offered by the BA faculty of NSTU is to improve the operations of businesses and other organisation by providing a source of qualified managers.

2. At present the BA faculty of NSTU set up in 1990 provides a multi-level scheme of training by offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree and diploma programmes. Students who elect to complete only a two-year programme of study if successful, are eligible for the award of an Associate of Arts degree (AA). A four-year programme leads to a Bachelor degree in Business Administration upon successful passing all assessment procedures. Students who complete a five-year programme and submit a graduation project are awarded a postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration in the selected area. Candidates for a Master degree in Business Administration take a six-year programme and are required to submit a thesis and take oral and written examinations. Those interested in research can earn a Candidate of Science degree by taking the Candidate of Science programme. The BA faculty also offers an accelerated 3, 5-year programme for candidates having certificates of technical or vocational institutions who are awarded a postgraduate Diploma in BA in the selected area. The faculty provides both full-time and part-time forms of training.

3. The BA faculty of NSTU is a community of students – undergraduate and postgraduate – and of staff: academic, administrative and technical. Qualified teachers and guest lecturers, both Russian and foreign, as well as representatives of the business community contribute to the effective functioning of the faculty. Many staff members are known internationally as authorities in their fields. At the moment 6 Doctors of Science (D.Sc.) and 39 Candidates of Science (Cand.Sc.) teach and do research in the departments of the BA faculty. Quite a few of the academic staff have taken short-term specialized courses in BA and economics at universities of Italy, France, Germany, and Holland (within the TACIS Economics Project). The faculty has close ties and co-operates actively with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, with a number of co-operative education programmes being developed.

4. The faculty is funded mainly by the federal government budget and partially by students’ tuition payments as well as by financial sponsorship from sponsoring firms and organizations.

5. The courses offered by the BA faculty aim to give students a survey of all relevant areas; to develop students’ analytical abilities and creativity in order to meet the needs of the profession and society through education, research and service; to educate managers who will become leaders in their fields, as well as to generate new knowledge that will strengthen the profession and respond to societal needs.

The BA faculty offers the following B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses:

  1. Management.

  2. Management Information Systems.

  3. Economics.

Management

6. Management is a practical activity which calls for good mental development, a wide range of background knowledge and specialist skills, and the ability to integrate the various aspects of management to one overall view of the managerial task – to help managers of different specialist functions to work effectively and rationally together towards common objectives and goals including that of innovation management.

7. The system of training emphasizes excellence in teaching basic disciplines, concepts, and techniques common to all management, such as economics, market economy, computer science and information technologies, accounting, finance, banking, industrial administration, production management, advertising, law, insurance, international business, etc. It also provides the students with the opportunity for further intellectual and personal development as professionals by learning liberal arts and social sciences, with the stress made on psychology, sociology, political science, and foreign languages.

8. Teaching methods vary including formal lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work, and projects. Application-oriented techniques often include case studies, which gives students the opportunity to analyse situations through informal debates and role-playing.

9. The skills gained in a basic study of BA build a solid foundation for a variety of careers. Students are trained for positions including employment manager, accountant, financial analyst, production manager, and the like.

Business Management Information Systems

10. This is an interdisciplinary course and it combines economics and computer science. This option is one of the most promising areas and trains for careers in business, management and industry. The immediate aim of the course is to provide the knowledge and skills involved in the day-to-day operation of a well-organized firm or organization.

11. The two interdisciplines have much in common. Teaching both within a unifying framework encourages further cross-fertilization. The organization or business as well as economy in general is a system and the role of data and information in the management and control of such systems is difficult to overestimate. General models of information systems setting out a structure for studying the problems of perception, communication, decision-making and motivation involved in information system design form the basis of the course. The capabilities and limitations of the computer as an information system component are also the subject of study.

12. The curriculum centres on such background majors as programming languages, control theory, computer networks, hardware/software design, database facilities, information technologies, accountancy, organization structure, industrial relations and management, business statistics, marketing, etc. Students are expected to attend formal lectures, seminars, and tutorials regularly, participate actively in class discussions, and submit papers or project reports as required.

Economics

13. This is a new course which is specifically designed to provide an integrated review of current trends in economics and management and also to provide the breadth of knowledge required for making sound judgements related to the economic development and growth. Economics is the science or principles of the way in which industry and trade produce and use wealth. The economics of national growth is of great importance to all governments as it is the most effective tool to develop national economies, and the national economy, in its turn, is the system by which a country’s money supply, industry, and trade are organized. Currently, when Russia is facing the transition to a market economy, to understand the principles and mechanism of its efficient functioning is a target goal of the economist.

14. So, the students will be encouraged to participate in critical assessment of business and industrial situations in economic and management terms. To do that students will be challenged to be inquisitive and creative in a variety of majors: micro- and macroeconomics, market economy, global and national economies, finance and credits, accountancy, industrial law, administrative, management, computer methods and information systems. This option trains for careers in business, industry, education, and government.
