6. My University East Ukraine Volodymyr Dahl National University
East Ukraine Volodymyr Dahl National University is non-private state financed educational establishment of the highest, fourth level of accreditation. The main directions of the activity of this educational establishment are: the educational process, scientific achievements, student life. The Dahl University is one of the leading higher educational establishments of Ukraine giving high quality education (according to the rating “Top–200 Ukraine–2007” our university is on the 12-th place among all the higher educational establishments of Ukraine and on the 6-th place among classical higher educational establishments).
In 1920 the first higher educational establishment was founded on the basis of locomotive-building plant in Luhans’k city. It was the first higher educational establishment in which specialists in machine-building were trained. Today this establishment is well-known all over the world as East Ukraine Volodymyr Dahl National University.
During the Great Patriotic War (World War IY) the institute was evacuated to Oms’k city. There it became the basis for the foundation of Oms’k State Technical University, a well-known establishment nowadays.
In 1996 our educational establishment obtained the fourth level of accreditation. In 2000 (September, 11) it was given the status of a national university. In 2001 (November, 13) the University was named after Volodymyr Dahl. Presently, 34 thousand 240 students study at East Ukrainian Volodymyr Dahl National University.
East Ukrainian Volodymyr Dahl National University is a huge educational, scientific and practical complex. It includes the main university in Luhans’k city and its branches in other cities. Among them are the following: Sievierodonets’ky Technological Institute, Rubizhne branch, Krasnodons’ky department of engineering and management, Antratsytivs’ky department of mining and transport, Crimean department (Livadiya, Feodosiya, Yevpatoriya, Skadovs’k), university’s college (Luhans’k city) and Sievierodonets’ky Chemical and Mechanical Professional Training College.
On the whole, there are 24 departments at the university, an institute of second higher education and remote learning, master’s course of public management, the Centre for school-leavers’ preparation (both Ukrainians and foreigners), the Department of foreign citizens professional preparation, 102 chairs, more than 60 chairs’ branches on plants and factories, the Centre for retraining administrative staff in business sphere, scientific–research Institute of applied ecology, almost 20 laboratories and engineering centers, scientific library, publishers with a printing-house, fleet of transport and etc.
University has a license to provide educational services in 13 of 16 branches of knowledge. Within these branches professionals are prepared in 54 chairs and 124 specialities, among them - 8 military.
Total amount of the university staff is 3166 people, among them 1083 – professors and lecturers. Junior specialists are taught by 260 lecturers at the university college and professional training school. There are 28 honoured men of education, science and technology work at the university. There are 81 former top-students. There are 68 academicians and corresponding members of branch academies of sciences and 742 lecturers with scientific degrees and academic status, including 114 professors and doctors of sciences work at the university. Most of the chairs’ heads (84%) are professors and doctors of sciences.
A powerful material and technical basis is created in the university. In Luhans’k, Antratsyt, Krasnodon, Lysychans’k, Rubizhne, Sverdlovs’k, Sievierodonets’k (Lugans’ka oblast’/region), Yalta (Livadiya), Feodosiya, Yevpatoriya (The Crimean Autonomy) and in the city of Skadovs’k (Khersons’ka oblast’) there are 55 educational buildings and laboratories the total territory of which is above 160 thousand square meters. The university also has a sanatorium and preventorium for one hundred people, recreation centres in Yevpatoriya (The Crimean Autonomy) and in Skadovs’k (Khersons’ka oblast’), sports and sanitation camp, 8 dormitories for 4000 persons, 4 canteens for 760 persons, 12 lunchrooms for 452 persons, aid posts. The university has stadiums, sports buildings, summer sports constructions for the sports activity of students and the staff.
Presently, the university has its own publishers where scientific journal “Visnyk of East Ukrainian Volodymyr Dahl National University” is published. It has been licensed by the higher certifying commission of Ukraine in 12 branches. Monographs, students’ books, methodic recommendations, scientific and educational books are published at the publishers. The newspaper “Universytets’ky Visnik” is published monthly in large editions.
An educational TV studio has been made in the university. The realization of this project has been possible due to the support of Mass-Media Development Fund of the USA Embassy in Ukraine.
Achievements and Awards
On the International exhibition ‘Modern Education in Ukraine - 2001’ the university was awarded a silver medal.
The same year on the International open popularity and quality rate ‘Zolota Fortuna’ (‘Golden Fortune’) the university was awarded the Silver Diploma and the Stella of Silver Quality in the nomination ‘Quality of the Third Century’ as a higher education institution with the most rapid development. The university staff received the certificate of honour from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. On the International exhibitions ‘Modern Education in Ukraine’ the university was awarded bronze and silver medals. In 2002 the Business Circles Association admitted that the university functioned according to the European standards.
In 2002 the university was awarded a medal and a certificate ‘For Achievements of High Quality, which correspond to the European standard’.
In 2003 on the International exhibition ’Modern Education in Ukraine - 2003’ the university received a bronze medal.
On the exhibition ’Modern Education in Ukraine - 2004’ the university was awarded a gold medal in the nomination ‘Innovative pedagogical technologies in the educational process.
In 2005 on the International exhibition ’Modern Education in Ukraine - 2005’ the university received a silver medal in the nomination ‘Providing training systems for higher education institutions graduates taking into account competitive conditions of the labour-market’.
In 2006 on the International exhibition ’Modern Education in Ukraine - 2006’ the university was awarded a silver medal in the nomination ‘Introduction of new organization forms of the educational process’.
