Toxoplasma gondii is an extremely important parasite of cats and you must know the life cycle very well. Some important points that I would like to make here probably were not covered in lecture, or this material corrects one point in particular that I want to make here:

Cats infected with FeLv or fiv that are Toxo positive are not likely to shed t. Gondii oocysts but are more likely to suffer a systemic relapse, such as neurological or ophthalmological signs

Cats usually become infected as young kittens (~70%)

Shedding of oocysts follows ingestion of meat with bradyzoites

Ingestion of oocysts by young cats leads to about 50% shedding oocysts

As young cats shedding oocysts for the first time, diarrhea is a clinical sign to expect.

Older cats can have a bout of shedding, but later shedding of oocysts isn't associated with diarrhea

These later bouts are usually secondary to eating meat with bradyzoites

Don't feed raw scraps to cats, or prevent predation during pregnancy
