PART 1

Grammar revision (the Passive)

Task 1. Translate the sentences into Russian. Pay attention to the Passive voice.

1. Individual members of the legislature are called “Members of Parliament”.

2. In British criminal trials the accused is presumed innocent until proved guilty.

3. Cases involving children (ten to seventeen years) are held in juvenile court.

4. Skills of interpretation and logical reasoning are developed, and students are encouraged to consider broader questions such as ethical judgement, political liberty and social control.

5. The murder in Charing Street is being investigated by our department.

6. The Prime Minister is advised by the Cabinet of about twenty other ministers.

7. Some important executive and legislative duties are still performed by the monarch.

8. Most of the work of Congress is carried out in committees.

9. The arrested are being questioned at the police station at the moment.

10. According to the report, a famous showman is killed with a knife.

Task 2. Change the following sentences into the Passive (if possible).

1. The reporter is reading the results of the general elections.

2. My father’s friend is mending the car which I’ve crashed.

3. The latest statistics says that violent crime is rising constantly in the country.

4. Not only criminals but also law-abiding citizens are buying the weapon to protect themselves.

5. Tornadoes destroy a great deal of property every year.

6. Martin is writing the company report just now.

7. They say the president is dying.

8. They always publish criminal news in Saturday’s newspaper.

9. The robbers are threatening the people in the shop with the gun.

10. Jane, hurry up. Sam is waiting for you.

11. People commit thousands of frauds every year.

12. A lot of accidents happen at this crossroad every week.

Task 3. Make the sentences negative and interrogative.

1. Many accidents are caused by dangerous driving.

2. A new ring road is being built round the city.

3. New evidence is being presented in court.

4. Jack is usually asked a lot of questions at the interview.

5. Tasks on legal matters are being solved by the students.

Task 4. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form (the Present Simple or Present Continuous, active or passive).

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I 1) ………. (be) Charles Trump. I 2) ……… (report) from the BBC News headquarters. Earlier this evening, at 6.24 p.m., an earthquake hit Cairo, Egypt. Many people 3) ………. (kill); many more 4) ………(injure) and much of the city 5) …….. (destroy).
