Текст 1.A FEW UNITS NAMED after FAMOUS SCIENTISTS.

Words lake volt or watt have become part of our language so completely that we sometimes forget that these are the names of famous saientist ,whose name it bears.

Let us recall a few such units…

An ampere is the unit of electric current in common use. It is that current which, when passed through a solution of silver nitrate in water, will deposit silver at the rate of 0.001118 grams per second. The second unit is named after Andre-Marie Ampere.

A few units named after famous scientists.

A coulomb is a unit of electric charge equal to the quantity of electricity transferred in one second by a current of one ampere. It is named after Charls Augustin de Coulomb.

A farad is a unit of electrical capacitance. It is named after Michael Faraday. A volt is the difference of potential between two points if one joule of work is required to transport one coulomb of charge from one point to the other. It is named after Alessandro Volta.

Текст 3. MICHAEL FARADAY

An English physicist was lecturing before an audience in London over 150 years ago about some of the tricks that could be performed with magnets and wires. He had a coil of wire connected to a galvanometer. Since there was no current flowing through the wire, the needle of the instrument was motionless. Then the lecturer lowered a bar magnet into the coil. He removed the magnet. The needle jerked again, this time to the left.

The story is told that after the lecture a woman from the audience approached the lecturer and asked him:”But, Mr. Faraday, of what use is the electricity produced for just a split second by this magnet?”

Very politely, Michael Faraday asked in return, ” Madame, of what use is a newborn baby?”

If a ship require a pilot she a cable or hoists a pilot jack when coming to the pilot station. A pilot boards the ship near the pilot station or in the offing. When his launch is approaching the ship a pilot ladder must be rigged on her port or starboard side.

The pilot manоuvres the ship into the harbour up to her berthing place. In s one ports a sea pilot takes the ship as far as the port entrance, where he is relieved by the port pilot who brings the ship to her berth.

Capitan: O. K. AT the ships allowed to overtake one another in the canal?

Pilot: Yes, but only in the straight parts.

Capitan: What are the rules of passing fishing and sailing ships?

Pilot: Well, as a rule, they keep clear of the fairway but take great care if they are in your way.

Capitan: Yes, I know that. By the way, Mr. Brown, what signals are hoisted when the ship has to make fast in the canal?

Pilot: No. 2 pennant by day and a white-red-white vertical light by night.

Capitan: That’s quite clear. Thank you. Any prohibitions in the canal? Pilot: Yes , during the transit and stay in the canal it is prohibited to throw overboard refuse and to empty cleansing water.

It is the duty of the customs officer to search a foreign ship for not reported and prohibited articles and goods and to place under seal the ship’s surplus stores. The customs officer usually examines the crew list, list of stores and provisions, the latest port clearance and the cargo manifest. He also requests the captain to fill in the general declaration (vessel report) and to sign the ship’s stores and crew’s effects declarations. When customs examination is over, he makes up a search note which the master is also to sign.
