Text 2

Most people who work in London get a break of about an hour for lunch. As they mostly work too far from home to go there for lunch, they make arrangements for their midday meal.

Many large firms have a canteen for their employees. In such canteens the food served is plain but adequate, and although there is some variety of choice, the number of dishes is usually small. The employees themselves fetch their dishes from a counter at which they are served. There they can find a tray on which to carry their knives, forks, spoons, plates, cups, saucers, and, of course, their food. A meal in a canteen is inexpensive and may consist of soup, fish and chips or meat and two vegetables, with fruit or a pudding of some sort as a dessert.

As there are so many people at work in London, there are numerous cafes and restaurants in every area. A meal may cost anything from a modest sum to quite a few pounds, depending on the restaurant and the food chosen. Moreover, one can generally get a meal, or at least a snack, in a pub. There are a number of popular cafes in practically every district of London. In many of these cafes there is self-service – there are no waiters or waitresses. Instead the customers help themselves and pay at a cash-desk before going to their tables. In recent years there has also been a big increase in the number of take-away food shops of all kinds.

Many employees do not go out for lunch. They bring their own sandwiches, and perhaps an apple or a bun, with which they have a cup of tea, probably made in the office. In summer, many people go out and sit on a bench in a park or public square, and eat their sandwiches there, giving the crumbs to the sparrows and pigeons. They are also often able to listen to lunch-time concerts and plays.

Text 3

One of the features of London is a large number of big stores. They are large buildings, many storeys high: in them you may buy almost anything you want, from a box of matches to furniture. They may look different, but they are all there for the same purpose – to supply the customer with the right goods, at the right time, at the right place, at the right price.

Most of the department stores are very modern and have lifts and escalators, good lighting, ventilation and heating. You can spend hours walking around one of these stores. If you are hungry, you need not leave the building, for nearly all big stores have cafes, snack bars or restaurants. You can ring up a theatre agency to book a seat for an evening show, or you may stop off at the travel agent to make arrangements for a holiday in Australia, or get a newspaper or magazine.

Although shops usually close at 5.30 or 6 p.m., on Thursdays many stores stay open as late as eight o’clock.

Another feature of London’s shopping life is the chain store, in which prices are low and a wide variety of goods is offered: foodstuffs, household goods, clothing and stationary. The goods are displayed on open counters and some shoplifting sometimes goes on. These chain stores keep their prices low thanks to bulk buying.

Many of the food stores operate on the serve yourself method: you go in, pick up a basket, walk round the shop and choose what you want. At the exit there is a cash desk where you pay for all your goods.
