VI. Перепишите следующие предложения и переведите их на русский язык, обращая внимание на бессоюзное подчинение.

VII. Перепишите следующие предложения, подчеркните Participle I и Participle II и определите функцию каждого из них, т.е. укажите является ли оно определением, обстоятельством или частью сказуемого.

1. Great Britain is a highly developed industrial country.

2. The USA became the world leading country at the beginning of the 20th century.

3. Washington is sometimes called the heart of America.

  1. The number of people studying foreign languages is increasing from year to year.

Oxford (continued)

  1. Oxford is an historical and unique institution. There is no clear date of foundation but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167.

  1. In the 13th century rioting between town and gown (townspeople and students) caused the establishment of primitive «halls of residence». These succeeded by the first of Oxford’s colleges. Until 1871 the university was only for men. From 1878 academic «halls of residence» were established for women who became members of the university. In the 1970’s most colleges opened their doors to both men and women.

  1. Oxford is an independent and self-governing institution consisting of the central university and colleges. Each college offers teaching in a wide range of subjects, has its name and coat of arms. The colleges, though independent and self-governing, form a core element of the university.

  1. The different spheres in which the University and Colleges are active usually respect the historical development of the University. Colleges select and admit students; provide accommodation, meals, common rooms, libraries, sports and social facilities for their students.

The University determines the content of course; organizes lectures and seminars; sets and marks examinations; awards degrees.

  1. As one of the leading international universities Oxford attracts scholars from all over the world. Each year Oxford welcomes talented students from all over the globe.

The programmes of study aim to make students think logically and independently. Oxford is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in the world. It has strong links with research institutions and with business and industry, both in the United Kingdom and overseas.
