Modal verbs with perfect infinitive
Вживання модальних дієслів з Perfect Infinitive.
1) Must + Perfect Infinitive виражає припущення, можливість, імовірність, перекладається словами повинно бути, ймовірно: He must have gone to the laboratory. – Він, ймовірно, пішов до лабораторії.
2) May, can + Perfect Infinitive виражає припущення, непевність, перекладається словами можливо, може бути: She may have lost your textbook. – Вона, можливо, загубила ваш підручник.
3) Could, might, should + Perfect Infinitive означає, що дія, яка могла б відбутися в минулому, не відбулася. Перекладається на українську мову словами слід би і т. д.: You should have prepared better. – Вам би слід було підготуватися краще.
Exercise 8. Translate the following sentences into Ukrainian.
1. Similar results may have been obtained by other researchers. 2. You should have carefully considered his suggestion. 3. You can’t have read about these results elsewhere. 4. They must have taken special measures to reduce the weight of the mechanical part. 5. You ought to have compared these phenomena. 6. Attention must have been called to this discovery. 7. The government should have thought about the problem that plague the world. 8. The damage to the environment must have been caused by dirty technologies. 9. Many of the countries could have cleaned their soil. 10. They could have found some profitable way of doing it. 11. They shouldn’t have been threatened with wars. 12. The international cooperation might have taken the form of an effective world government. 13. In this case individual nations couldn’t have had the right to take up arms. 14. They couldn’t have realized the serious nature of the problem.
Exercise 9. Translate the following sentences into English.
1. Вам потрібно було приділити більше часу цьому питанню, через це ви не можете закінчити роботу вчасно. 2. Він не міг пропустити стільки занять, я сам бачив, як він готувався до кожного. 3. Можливо, йому все ж вдалося поговорити з професором, оскільки зараз він задоволений своїми результатами. 4. Ймовірно, наш інститут все ж отримав грант на проведення цього дослідження. 5. Вам не потрібно було приходити так рано – начальство приходить тільки о десятій. 6. Уряду потрібно було розробити більш гуманну систему освіти. 7. Наукові знання могли би надати величезну допомогу у вирішенні багатьох проблем. 8. Вчені могли б розробити більш досконалі технології з очистки води. 9. Вони могли б отримати кредит для виконання своєї роботи. 10. Не може бути, що вчені розглядають цю проблему серйозно.
