Ex.1 a) Find the English equivalents of these words and phrases in the text. Read and translate into Russian the sentences in which they are used.

c) Give your variant of translation of the following sentences:

  1. And where do you think we were going? To Princeton, to attend a dance and a ball game, if you please! I didn't ask you if I might go, because I had a feeling that your secretary would say no.

  2. Dear me, Daddy, I seem to have a very ejaculatory style today; this page is peppered with exclamations.

  3. A girls' college is a busy place and we do get tired by the end of the day! Particularly when the day begins at dawn.

  4. The accompanying illustration is hereby reproduced for the first time. It looks like a spider on the end of a string, but it isn't at all; it's a picture of me learning to swim in the tank in the gymnasium.

  5. Very busy time - commencement in ten days, examinations tomorrow; lots of studying, lots of packing, and the outdoor world so lovely that it hurts you to stay inside.

  6. Julia is going abroad this summer - it makes the fourth time. No doubt about it, Daddy, goods are not distributed evenly.

  7. I shall be earning fifty dollars a month! Doesn't that impress you as a perfectly exorbitant amount? She offered it; I should have blushed to ask for more than twenty-five.

  8. How does my programme strike you, Daddy? I am getting quite independent, you see. You have put me on my feet and I think I can almost walk alone by now.

  9. You mustn't get me used to too many luxuries. One doesn't miss what one has never had; but it's awfully hard going without things after one has commenced thinking they are his-hers by natural right.

  10. I seem to be floundering in a sea of metaphor - but I hope you grasp my meaning?

  11. Well, Daddy, it did appeal to me! I almost weakened; if he hadn't been so dictatorial, maybe I should have entirely weakened. I can be enticed step by step, but I won’t be forced.

  12. In any case, I packed my trunk fast and came up here. I thought I'd better see my bridges in flames behind me before I finished writing to you. They are entirely reduced to ashes now.

Ex.2 Listen to the tape (Judy’s letter to Daddy-Long-Legs written in June in Magnolia - pp.164- 165) and say if the statements below are true or false.Correct the false statements.

  1. That summer Jervis Pendleton decided to go abroad entirely by himself.

  2. Jervis Pendleton knows nothing about Judy’s guardian.

  3. Judy didn't have the courage to tell Jervis about the John Grier Home and her past.

  4. Jervis Pendleton insisted on Judy’s going to Europe and shee agreed.

  5. Jervis Pendleton’s idea of spending summer holidays together didn’t appeal to Judy.

  6. Judy confesses that she can be enticed step by step, but will never be forced.

  7. Jervis Pendleton called Judy a silly, foolish, irrational, quixotic, idiotic, stubborn child.

  8. Judy thought she'd better see her bridges in flames behind her but she didn’t manage to refuse such a tempting offer.

Ex.3 Discuss the following points:

  1. Do you consider Judy to be an enthusiastic and easily-delighted person? Is she able to enjoy life and to see its inner sense? Prove you point of view with the quotations from the text.

  2. I really do love to write to you; it gives me such a respectable feeling of having some family”. Comment on this phrase of Judy’s. What’s your opinion of the girl’s real attitude to Daddy-Long-Legs? Is it due to her letters that Judy has got so attached to him?

  3. Would you like me to tell you something? You are not the only man to whom I write letters”. Who are other men Judy keeps in touch with? Do they answer her letters? What can you say about the style and message of their letters? What does this correspondence mean for Judy?

  4. Speak about Jervis Pendleton and Jimmy McBride. What’s their part in Judy’s life?

  5. How is Judy going to spend her summer vacation? Do you appreciate her wish to be independent? How do you expect Daddy-Long-Legs to react to that?

  6. The World owes me nothing, and distinctly told me so in the beginning. I have no right to borrow on credit, for there will come a time when the World will repudiate my claim”. Comment on this phrase of Judy’s. How does it characterize her life position? Do you agree or disagree with this statement of hers?

  7. We almost quarrelled--I am not sure but that we entirely did!” What, do you think, is Jervis Pendleton’s attitude to Judy? Why did he insist on her going to Europe? Do you think he would be more pleased with Judy if she accepted his offer at once?

  8. Speak about the way Judy spent her summer holidays. Do you think she regretted her decision to go to the Cliff Top with the Patersons?

Ex.4 “So you see -I am not so different from other girls - I get letters, too”.

Write two short letters to Judy - one from Jervis Pendleton, the other from Jimmy McBride. Play the scene of Judy’s receiving them. Show her reaction, and attitude to the two young men. Which letter will she read first? How will she comment on their contents and structure?
