The Future Perfect Tense

The Future Perfect is used to express:

1. – an action which will be completed before a given future moment which can be introduced by by the time, by then, by that time, by, before, until/till etc.:

Example: You’ll have gone to bed by the time I’ve finished.

Ex. 1

Read and translate the sentences. Comment on the use of the Future Perfect.

1. By the time my parents get back home I will have cleaned the house from top to bottom. 2. The tourists hope that the tornado will have finished before they arrive in California. 3. Next month I will have known Rick for twenty years. 4. By the time you start writing your test I will have finished mine. 5. When you drop in at my place, I will have painted to door. 6. Will you have arranged everything by tomorrow? 7. When Tom gets to the cinema, the film will have started already.

Ex. 2

Answer the following questions about the actions, which will have happened by a certain moment in the future.

Example: Has Jim taught you to play golf? (next month) - Not yet, but he’ll have taught me to play golf by next month.

Ex. 3

Add some missing information about the person mentioned.

Example: By the time the dinner is ready, Helen … (do/the rooms). - By the time the dinner is ready, Helen will have done the rooms.

1. Today Ted and Emy are celebrating the tenth anniversary of their married life. Emy has been up since early morning, cooking and baking. Ex. 4

Paul wants to be an artist. He's reading about a famous artist called Winston Plummer.

Winston Plummer was a great artist, who had a wonderful career. He won lots of prizes before he was twenty. By the age of twenty-five he had had his own exhibition. He was the subject of a TV documentary by the time he was thirty. By the age of thirty-five he had become world-famous. He made millions of pounds from his pictures before he was forty.

Paul is daydreaming about his own future career. What is he thinking?

e.g. I hope I'll have won lots of prizes before I'm twenty.

Complete the following sentences.

1 It's seven o'clock in the evening, and Andrew is starting to write an essay. He writes one page every fifteen minutes. He plans to finish the essay at midnight. How many pages will he have written?

Complete the live news report. Open the brackets using the Future simple, continuous or perfect form of the verb.
