Dear Lil,

I wanted to let you know that everything is fine and to say that you should stay at your mother's as long as possible. You need a nice peaceful vacation there in the Miami sun.

The children are fine. Sally is really growing up. She's started going steadily with the Wheel­er kid — the one who wears a black jacket and drives a motor-cycle. And Roger is showing a ma­turity that would really gratify you. The very day after his birthday, he got himself an after-school job. (You have to be sixteen to work where they have liquor). As for Billy and Janie, they are no trouble at all. I hardly see them from morning till night. And don't worry, they are eating plenty. We have pizza almost every night for dinner and if I didn't fill them up on marshmallows and cookies first, they would eat ten slices apiece.

The household chores are absolutely no problem. I take Billy and Janie marketing with me and in no time at all we have two pushcarts filled to over­flowing. I leave the beds open for the fresh air all day long and I have discovered that if I let the mud (they are excavating in front of the house) dry up for a day or two, it hardly shows on the rug at all.

Yesterday when the sink overflowed, the kitch­en floor got a good washing. Speaking of washing, how can Sally get her black wool sweater back to the right size? Actually the damask tablecloth, dishtowel, napkins etc., come out of the machine an interesting color, a cross between charcoal and steel grey; it is the sweater that is the prob­lem.

My secretary, Miss Burnsides, is suffering from a broken Romance. That Congressman's son she has been going with threw her over for a student nurse. The poor child is distraught and when I go down to the office for my mail, I take her out for a drink and a bite and talk to her like a Dutch uncle…

1) Find these words and word combinations in the text.
