Step 1. Read the dialogues

  1. Where is Pete?

He is at the stadium.

What is he doing?

He is playing football.

  1. Pete, you look upset.

Yes, I had a bad day yesterday.

Why? What happened?

I hurt my foot when I was playing football yesterday.

  1. Will you be at home at 5 p.m.?

Yes, I’ll be writing a report on history at that time.

CONTINUOUS (PROGRESSIVE) TENSES

The Continuous (Progressive) Tenses give the idea that an action is in progress during a particular time. The tenses say that an action begins before, is in progress during and continues after another time or action

to be + Participle I

Ex. 1. Write the Present Participle of the following verbs and read them out:

to come - coming to win -winning

to take - to get -

to see - to swim -

to study -studying to run -

to try - to begin -

to play - to visit -visiting

to show - to listen -

Ex. 2. Answer your group-mate’s questions:

Model 1: What are you doing now?

I’m reading an interesting book.

Prompts: study English;

listen to the teacher;

discuss a text with group-mates;

sit at the desk;

read a text.

Model 2: What is Pete doing now?

He is watching a football match on TV.

Prompts: look at the blackboard;

learn a dialogue;

talk with a group-mate;

write grammar exercises;

study English grammar.

Model 3: What were you doing yesterday when Ann came in?

I was writing a report.

Prompts: read a journal;

write a letter;

learn a poem;

talk on the phone;

have coffee.

Model 5: What will you be doing at 10 a.m. tomorrow?

I’ll be practising in the gym.

Model 6: What will Pete be doing at this time tomorrow?

He’ll be meeting Ann at the station.

Prompts: have morning training practice;

work at the library;

read morning newspapers;

help his mother about the house.

make lunch.

Ex. 3. Complete the phrases in column A with suitable information in column B. Translate the sentences:

Ex. 4. Use the verbs in brackets in the Continuous (Progressive) tense forms. Translate the sentences:

3. It’s 10.30 in the morning. We ( have) our training practice.

4. If you come to Jane at 9.00 tomorrow morning, she ( sleep) still.

5. Listen! Susan ( play) the piano.

6. While the boys ( play) football, the girls ( run) sprint.

7. Where was John when you came?- He was at home. He ( write) a report.

8. It’s early morning. We ( do) our morning exercises.

9. Where is John? He ( practise) at the stadium.

10. Please don’t take this book. Ann (read) it.

Ex. 5. Disagree with what your group-mate says:

Model 1: John is reading a book/ newspaper.

No, he isn’t reading a book.

He’s reading a newspaper.

Model 2: John was listening to the radio when Ann came in / music.

No, he wasn’t listening to the radio.

He was listening to music.

Model 3: John will be watching a new detective film at 8.30 tomorrow/

action film.

No, he won’t be watching a new detective film.

He’ll be watching a new action film.

1. We are playing cricket/ golf.

2. He was travelling about Italy/France.

3. She is talking to Ann/ Lucy.

4. They are discussing a new book/ film.

5. We’ll be practising at that time tomorrow/ listen to music.

6. They were drinking coffee/ tea.

7. She is writing a letter / report.

8. They will be waiting for their teacher at 7 o’clock/ coach.

9. He is speaking on the phone / have breakfast

10. The film is getting more interesting/ boring .

Ex.6. Say and ask as in the model :

Model 1: Look! She is running marathon.

Is she really running marathon?

Model 2: Pete was meeting his friend when I saw him at the station.

Was Pete really meeting his friend at the station?

Model 3: Let’s go to the stadium! Spartak will be playing

against the Dynamo team.

Will they really be playing against the Dynamo team?

  1. She is talking with her coach.

  2. We’ll be practising at this time tomorrow.

  3. She was swimming when I came in.

  4. They are discussing the game .

  5. He was meeting his friend at the airport at 9.30 yesterday.

  6. Ann is playing the piano now.

  7. Pete is at home now. He is writing a report .

  8. She was learning a poem when I called her.

  9. Look! He is running over there.

  10. Don’t call him so early. He will be sleeping.

TO BE GOING TO

“To be going to” is used to express intention,

a prior plan or a decision to do this in future.

Ex 7. Substitute to be going to for the verb in the Future Simple. Translate the sentences:

Model: It will be a long and difficult race.

It’s going to be a long and difficult race.

1. I’ll say some words about our new coach.

2. She’ll meet him at the airport.

3. The bus will leave at 5 o’clock.

4. So, we’ll play tennis on Sunday.

5. They’ll start practising next week.

6. What will you do tonight?

7. He’ll visit his parents at the week-end.

8. Who will meet the British footballers at the airport?

  1. 9. Will you stay at home? I’ll come to see you.

10. He’ll spend his summer vacation in Italy.

Ex. 8. Create situations in which you can use the following phrases:

  1. I’m going to say some words about the Olympic Games.

  2. We are not going to discuss the last game of the Dynamo football team.

  3. You have lost the game. What are you going to do next?

USING THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS (PROGRESSIVE)

TO EXPRESS FUTURE TIME

The Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense is used

to express future planned events or definite intentions

Ex. 9 a. Read and act out the dialogues in the left-hand column.

b. Act out similar dialogues. Use the prompts in the right-hand column:

1.- What are you doing at the week-end? on Sunday, tomorrow

- At the week-end? I’m going to visit my parents. my friend, my grandmother

-Oh, there is an interesting football match at the basketball, lawn tennis

stadium on Sunday. Let’s go! the Palace of Sports, the Tennis

Courts

- Who is playing?

- Two very good teams. The match is going

to be interesting.

- Thank you for the invitation.

2.- So, we are playing tennis this evening. tomorrow, at the week-end

- I’m afraid not. Not this evening. tomorrow, at the week-end

-Why? It is going to be a very interesting game.

I am in a good form.

-Well, yes, but my parents are going away friends, grandmother

on holiday and I am going to see them off.

- It’s a pity we can’t play this evening.

-What about the day after tomorrow then? some day next week

- O.K.

3.- Tomorrow we are visiting Raubichi Ratomka, Staiki.

- Are we going by bus ? train

-Yes, of course.

- What time is the bus leaving? train

- At 8.00 in the morning. Don’t forget 9.00
