Internal revenue service

It seems that everyone tells the IRS everything: the interest on your savings’ account; the amount you earned last year; how much you received in alimony, child support, workers’ compensation, or unemployment compensation; how much you spent on other taxes, doctors and prescriptions; how many children you have at home. Almost everything that affects the amount of tax you ultimately have to pay goes into the IRS’s computer system. Theoretically, this information cannot be shared with another government agency; in actuality, however, access to it may still be granted.

FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION

The files of the FBI, with information that ranges from missing children to interstate criminal activity to the last known address of a potentially dangerous individual, are open to law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Although much of the data, such as that gathered from police, court, and prison records, is accurate, some that provided by informants, for example – may not be. Access to and dissemination of inaccurate or false data can lead to serious errors, sometimes causing innocent people to be arrested or fired from their jobs.

Credit bureaus collect data about people from banks and other financial institutions, department stores, small businesses, and credit card companies; they also supply data to them. The data include indebtednessn and loan repayment history, marital status, whether the person’s residence is owned or rented and how long he or she has lived there, next of kin, military service, employment history, and other personal information. The Fair Credit Reporting Act of 1970 allows you access to your record and grants you the right to challenge, to explain marks against you and to have incorrect information changed. Problems arise when the record contains false or incorrect information or when there is illegal access – electronic trespass.

Hospitals and clinics keep computerized records about their patients’ medical conditions, medications, family members, insurance coverage, and ability to pay.

The information you supply when you apply for unemployment compensation is checked against records from your former employer(s).

Given this proliferation of databases in credit bureaus, banks, department stores, government agencies, political organizations, hospitals, insurance companies, and businesses, we must wonder whether there is any such thing as privacy.
