4. SPEAKING POINTS: 1) Now, when Dorian had smth to conceal from other people, how did his life change? And himself? Do you think his desire to turn a new leaf excused his cruelty for Sybil?

3) What do you think of the way in which Lord Henry broke the news of Sybil’s death? And the way he tried to console Dorian?

3) How does Basil Hallward react to Dorian’s behaviour after Sybil’s death? What do you think of this character? Could he and Dorian be friends?

5. PICK OUT aphorisms and paradoxes. Comment on them.

in disguise, to frequence; the most celebrated musicians, symphonic arrangement of flowers; had a marked influence on the young people; religion-Roman-Catholic Communion; psychology of perfumes: to be able to expel melancholy from the soul; study of jewels; wonderful stories about jewels rendered the man invisible; made him eloquent; appeased anger; provoked sleep; drove away the fumes of wine; cast out the demons; cured the plague ; kept the bearer from any danger; embroidery; musical instruments; means of forgetfulness; …The Renaissance knew of strange manners of poisoning…by a helmet and a lighted torch, by an embroidered glove and a jeweled hand; by a guilded pomander and by an amber chain. Dorian Gray was poisoned by a book.

4. SPEAKING POINTS:

1) Dorian was becoming more and more notorious in the society, wasn’t he? What rumours circulated about him? Where were there any grounds for the rumours?

  1. What precautions did Dorian take to hide the picture away from the strangers? How did he feel about the picture? Did he find it interesting to observe the degradation of his soul? Would he like to change anything in his life? (reserved, corked-up, insincere, unfriendly, shy)

  2. Why, do you think Lord Henry sent the newspaper article about the inquest? Was he no longer sorry for Dorian?

  3. WHAT KIND OF BOOK did Lord Henry bring to Dorian? Do you think it was easy for him to find just the right book for Dorian? Why?

  4. What was Dorian’s mode of life? Speak about the things he went in for, his interests, occupations, meetings with Lord Henry and other people. Despite his good looks, why couldn’t he be the life and soul of any party? What do you think of the statement, that Dorian was poisoned by the book which Lord Henry had given him? Have you ever been so influenced by any book?
