6. WHAT IS CHAPTER 15 ABOUT? 1). How does the author depict the society, contemporary? Pick out the DETAILS which O.Wilde employs to characterize the people at the party. What details show, that it was an extremely tedious party? 2). Why, do you think, the author doesn’t give details about what caused coolness in Alan Campbell and Dorian’s relations? And again, why is nothing said about what made Alan take his final decision to help Dorian, though before it he was very unlikely to agree to it?

1. THANSLATE THE OPENING PARAGRAPH up to “He had often…”

2.GIVE THE MEANING OF : opium-dens; to be sillouetted against smth; marionettes; misshapen figure; theologians; ill-famed place; to make peace with God; hypocricy-hypocrite.

3. GIVE THE CONTEXT: to gnaw at smb.

to be better off than smb.

to be laid at one’s door (to be at one’s door)

a hope flashed across his brain

4. COMMENT UPON:

- Passion makes one think in a circle…

- Memory, like a terrible malady, was eating his soul away.

5. ANSWER THE QUESTIONS: Did Dorian change his ideas of the beautiful? Where did he go in a hansome? Does the description of the place make contrast to the refined and exquisite things which surrounded him at the beginning of the book?

6. PICK OUT THE WORDS from the description of the place, which help to create the feeling of contempt and disgust/( COMPARISONS or SIMILES).

7. PICK OUT SYNONYMS for “smell”. Specify the meaning of each.
