At the hotel

1. Memorize the following words and expressions:

To put up at a hotel – останавливаться в гостинице,

hotel accommodation – номер в гостинице,

arrival – прибытие,

departure – отъезд,

to fill in an arrival card – заполнить карточку прибытия,

receptionist – администратор; служащий, который оформляет гостей в гостинице,

reception desk (counter) – бюро администратора, где оформляют гостей,

room-clerk – дежурный в гостинице,

to reserve (to book) – заказывать, бронировать,

to make a reservation – забронировать место,

in advance – заранее,

block letters – печатные буквы,

permanent address – постоянный адрес,

to check in (to sign in ) – регистрироваться в гостинице по прибытии,

to check out (to sign out )– освободить номер в гостинице, выписаться,

checking out time – время выписки из гостиницы,

to register – регистрировать(ся),

to confirm – подтверждать,

ID (identification card ) – удостоверение личности,

to extend a stay – продлить пребывание,

lobby – вестибюль,

room service – обслуживание в номере,

bill – счет,

to make out a bill – выписать счет.

2. Read and translate the following sentences:

  1. The receptionist handed me a form to fill it in.

  2. It was difficult to get hotel accommodation during the Olympic Games.

  3. Please, let us know if you decide to extend your stay here.

  4. “I’m checking out, can I have the bill, please?” said Mr. Blake.

  5. At the reception desk I saw a line of people waiting to check in.

  6. The room-clerk asked me to register my name in the visitor’s book.

  7. Are you sure the checking out time in this hotel is 1 p.m.?

  8. I said, “I have a reservation here. The hotel sent a letter confirming it.”

  9. When registering the visitor said he would prefer a ten-floor room to a four- floor room.

  10. Will you write your name down here in block letters, please?

  11. In summer one should make a reservation in advance.

  12. I prefer to make a reservation by phone.

  13. It isn’t an easy thing to put up at a hotel in a small town like this.

  14. Where can I find accommodation at a moderate price?

  15. Mr. Blake, we are holding that reservation for you. The room will be held until you arrive (until 7 o’clock).

  16. I want to make a short stay at the Embassy hotel.

  17. Hello, my name is … I’m calling to confirm my reservation for a single room.

  18. Would you mind signing the register?

  19. Make out my bill, please.

  20. Unfortunately we are booked up till October.

  21. Once you have checked in you will never want to check out.

3. Read and translate the dialogue:

B.: Good morning. I’d like to check in.

Reception Clerk: Do you have a reservation with us?

B.: Yes, I do. I made a reservation by phone last night.

R.C.: Your name, please?

B.: Brian Mitchell from San Francisco.

R.C.: Would you spell your name please?

B.: M as in “ Mary”, I as in “Isaac”, T as in “ Tommy”, C as in “ Charley”, H as in “ Harry”, E as in “ Edward”, double L as in “ Lucy”.

R.C.: Okay. Let me see. You have a reservation for a single room. Is that correct?

B.: Perfectly correct.

R.C.: Have you already decided how many nights to stay?

B.: At least until Wednesday. But I may stay longer than that. When should I inform you if I decide to extend my stay?

R.C.: Let us know about your decision Tuesday night. You can give us a ring until 11 p.m..

B.: All right. What’s the price of the room.

R.C.: 75 dollars per night. Please, fill in the registration card. Print your name and permanent address.

B.: Should I sign my name?

R.C.: Put your signature right here. Okay, will you pay in cash or by credit card?

B.: By credit card. Do you need it right now?

R.C.: You can give me your credit card before checking out.

B.: You take Master Card, don’t you?

R.C.: Yes, surely. But I’ll need to see your ID.

B.: Is the driver license all right?

R.C.: Yes, of course.

B.: By the way, what’s the checking out time?

R.C.: One o’clock in the afternoon.

B.: Thank you. I have some additional questions.

R.C.: I’ll be glad to answer them.

B.: What about the room service?

R.C.: Room service is available from 6 to 10 p.m. You can dial your order from the telephone in your room.

B.: Where is your restaurant?

R.C.: The restaurant is on the 25th floor. We also have a coffee shop. It’s right here in the lobby.

B.: Thank you for the information.

R.C.: You are welcome. A bellboy will help you with your luggage. Your room is number 1215. Enjoy your stay.

B.: Thanks.
