MUNICH, THE CAPITAL OF BAVARIA

Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria, is the third largest city in West Germany. It has the population of 1.3 million. It is situated at 530 metres above sea level in the very heart of the Bavarian pre-Alps. Some people say Munich was founded in the 8th century by monks from the Tegernsee Benedectine Monastery. However, the more common view holds that the city was founded in 1158 by Duke Henry the Lion.

Munich is not only a major international tourist center, but also an important industrial town. Six world-famous breweries are situated here, as well as the headquarters of such companies as Siemens and BMW. The capital of Bavaria is also a science and media centre. Almost 300 publishing companies and dozens of film and TV studios are based here. There are also 10 universities and technical colleges and a number of research institutes. Munich is often called a “city of students” with its 100 000 students from Germany and other countries.

Munich is a quite artistic town. There are 45 different theatres from the State Opera House to cabarets, 40 museums including the Deutsche Museum and the Old Art gallery with its collection of world-famous paintings and over 80 other galleries and concert halls. Many of the sights of Munich are located in the city centre. Marienplatz is the heart of the city. There is the magnificent New Town Hall in the square. It was built in the 19th century. It is crowned with the heraldic figure that symbolizes the town – the Child of Munich. In the tower there is a carillon with 43 bells which ring at 11 o’clock every day. Karlsplatz is another famous square in Munich. It is the start of a large shopping centre with lots of shops and cafes. The largest historical monument in Munich is the Court Residence where Bavarian kings lived. Now it houses different art collections, for example, the State Coin Collection, the State Egyptian Art Collection and the Residential Treasury. The English Gardens is the largest park in the city. It opened in 1792. The park is 5 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide and has a lot of streams and ponds on its territory. Olympiapark, built for the 1972 Olympic Games, is one of the most impressive places in Munich. There is a 290-metres tall Olympia Tower and lots of sport buildings, a stadium and a swimming pool. Munich is famous for its beer festival that takes place every September and October. It is called the Oktoberfest. The city welcomes about 5 million guests from all over the world who drink litres of famous Bavarian beer, take part in contests and watch traditional processions in which the breweries exhibit their products.
