The Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is the oldest production company in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. The historical beginnings of the mine itself date back to the medieval times. For many centuries, salt had been the country’s economic foundation.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a unique place. It is the only mining facility in continuous use since the Middle Ages. In 1994, under the Resolution of the Polish President, the mine became the Historical Site. Its original excavations – headings, inclined drifts, salt stalls, lakes, shafts and fore shafts illustrate all the stages of mining technology evolvement.

After over 7 centuries of intensive salt mining, the task ahead the Mine is to secure and rescue its cultural heritage created over many centuries including historical excavations and the related infrastructure and to make it available to the public in the optimal way. The main directions of the preservation works include:

  • closing the unnecessary hollow places and eliminate the water inflowing to the Mine,

  • securing the historical chambers including the direct reconstruction of individual historical excavation,

  • revitalizing the post-industrial areas, including stripping down and the modernization of buildings and technical infrastructure,

  • making the historical excavations available to the public, including restoration works.

The historical excavations, just like all the other excavations at the Mine, are exposed to mining risks related to substantial stresses occurring in the rock mass, as well as to the inflow of fresh water to the Mine.

The Caribbean Queen was an old, broken-down boat. As we stepped on deck, I wondered if we had made the ride decision. There were no other passenger, but it was too late to turn back. As soon as we had climbed on board, the blond, sun-tanned captain shouted orders, and we were off to Utila.

Fortunately, after a few minutes, the pump started working again. The captain skilfully steered us trough four hours of stormy weather, until we reached the calm harbour at Utila. There, as we walked of the Caribbean Queen, I promised myself that whatever the price, we were definitely flying back to Honduras.

The sun shone brightly as we set out on our journey. However, an hour later the sea began to get rough. A storm was approaching and very soon waves were pouring over the deck. Suddenly there was a shout from below. The engine room was flooded! But before the crew could start pumping the seawater out, the engine stopped. The boat was in trouble and the crew were told to start throwing the cargo overboard. Matt was the first on his feet, throwing as many things as he could into the sea.

A year ago I was backpacking in the Caribbean with my friend Matt. After we had spent a week in Honduras, we decided to go to the island of Utila. The 15-minute flight to the island was expensive, so we booked a 4-hour boat trip on the Caribbean Queen, a cargo boat carrying provision to the islanders.
