Одной из национальных особенностей голландцев в разные времена являлся способ защиты своей земли от захватчиков. Голландия расположена на два метра ниже уровня моря. Если возникала угроза вторжения захватчиков, жители открывали ворота плотин, и вода затопляла их города.
Когда голландцы решили затопить свои земли в 1672, это нанесло сокрушительный удар по семье Вермеера. Земля, принадлежащая Марии Тинз, находилась как раз в самом центре затопления. Она потеряла весь свой доход, который приносила ей собственность. Состояние семьи Вермеера стало резко ухудшаться. А смерть его покровителя художника в 1673 и вовсе стала для Вермеера катастрофой.
Но не только отсутствие спроса на его картины, и смерть покровителя привели художника к его печальному концу. Исполняя поручения Марии Тинз, Вермеер совершил акт предательства, так не похожий на него. В Амстердаме он, очевидно, получил с должника деньги, принадлежавшие Марии Тинз и, вероятно, прикарманил их. Должно быть, это был ужасающий поступок для человека, который всегда был послушным и покладистым, который восхищался женщинами и боготворил их.
Что он собирался делать с этими деньгами? Вложить в какое-нибудь предприятие? Расплатиться с собственными долгами? Мы никогда не узнаем. Известно лишь, что все пошло не так, как он планировал. Его обнаружили, и пять месяцев спустя он умер. Может это чувство вины убило его? Или непомерно тяжелая ноша, которую он нес на своих плечах. Он заботился о своей большой семье, все отдавая им, не оставляя ничего себе. У него не было ничего своего. Когда он умер, в доме нашлась всего одна его картина, и ту пришлось продать, чтобы заплатить долги.
Его женитьба на Катарине, семья Марии Тинз, покровительство Ван Рийвена, все это давало ему, как художнику, свободу. Но, в конце концов, Вермеер, который так умело и отчаянно защищал свой мир, вдруг обнаружил, что этот мир ополчился на него, стал для него тюрьмой.
